CHILD & ADOLESCENT MENTAL HEALTH REFERRALS OUT OF HOURS

NB
For patient safety all telephone calls must be transferred person to person, no caller should be ‘put through’ to an unanswered phone.
Referral criteria
- Age range 0 -17 years inclusive
- Glasgow hospital wards, A&E departments
- GEMS
- Social Work standby service
Patients from Clyde or other Health Board areas are not accepted unless presenting to a Glasgow A&E dept or a current in-patient. Referrers of patients resident inGlasgow who present at sites in other Health Board areas should be advised to contact the CAMH service for the area.
Self Referrals are not accepted.
Model of Service
Under 12 years
All referrals of children less than 12 years are taken by the 2nd on call CAMHS (SpR/ ST 4-6).
12 – 17 Year olds
Young people will be managed as locally as possible to minimise patient transfer. The 1st on call Mental Health doctor for each area in Glasgowis site bound and will be supported by the 2nd on call CAMHS (SpR/ ST 4-6) who is mobile across the City. Where face to face assessment of a young person is required this should be initially by 1st on call at their base site (Medical A&E exceptions below).If the patient cannot travelthen 1st on will discuss how to proceed with the 2ndon CAMHS (SpR/ ST 4-6).
Children and young people referred from the Stobhill and Yorkhill in-patient units and other wards at Yorkhill will be managed on site.
Referrals from Glasgow Royal Infirmary, Western Infirmary Glasgow or Victoria Infirmary Accident and Emergency Services will be handed over from Yorkhill switchboard to 2nd on call.
Consultants in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry staff a 3rd tier of call.
Self Harm
Special arrangements exist for Self Harm.
Under 12Child is admitted to Yorkhill for evaluation the next day by the
Paediatric Liaison team
12 -17 yrs Patients presenting with self harm between 9:30am – 5:30pm, 7 days per week should be referred to the Adolescent Self-Harm Service. 0141 300 6363. All A&E departments have their page number and should contact the service directly.
12 – 15 yrsWhen medically fit, patients may be transferred to the Self Harm bed at YorkhillHospital for evaluation by the Adolescent Self Harm service the next day.
16 – 17 yrsAssessed by first on call at locality
Contact details
Yorkhill switchboard on 0141 201 0000 is the first contact and will direct referrers appropriately. Yorkhill will hold the rotas and contact details for 2nd on call and 3rdon call. There should be one call for referrers who will then be passed to the appropriate person. Under 12 year olds
Calls from these referrers will be handed over person to person from the Yorkhill Telephonist to the 2nd on call.
12 years – 17 years
Referrers calling Yorkhill for young people will be handed over to the ParkheadHospital switchboard (apart from exceptions from listed A&E departments below), this must be a person to person hand over between switchboards. The ParkheadHospital switchboard hold information on all four 1st on call Mental Health rotas for: Stobhill (Mackinnon House), Gartnavel, Leverndale and Parkhead. The Southern General 1st oncall is accessed via the Leverndale 1st on call. Referrers will be connected to the appropriate 1st on depending on post code. (This is a well established system for adult services.)

Handover
1st on call doctors should make sure that details of any clinical contact from the call period are given to the appropriate CAMHS team the next working day from 9am.

Medical staff assuming call on a weekend day or public holiday should be informed by the departing doctor of equivalent grade about any continuing clinical matter.
Monitoring
As this is a new service arrangement, evaluation is vital. Trainee Medical Staff workload will be monitored through the normal process by medical staffing. Qualitative measures for monitoring purposes are being considered, your feedback on these would be helpful.
