SpeakUp! Prevention Coalition Meeting

Sonali gave us some updates on activities in our coalition.

  1. Coalition Excellence Award – GOT outcomes. We are a Phase 2 finalist.
  2. In July Sonali applied for this award based on previous coalition work.
  3. It is sponsored by CADCA’s National Coalition Institute, it recognizes coalitions achieving contributions of positive changes in community-level outcomes.
  4. Short-term outcomes
  5. Social Host campaign.
  6. New Liquor class in LF to delay serving alcohol until 6:00 pm.
  7. North Chicago coalition mentoring.
  8. Intermediate outcomes
  9. Text-A-Tip.
  10. Our Stories Video Documentary.
  11. Long-term outcomes
  12. 4th of July, worked with the Festival Committee to make changes in beverage servers (trained instead of just volunteer), as well as rerouted traffic pattern away from alcohol tent.
  13. Post Prom. In the first year we had 50 students, this year we have 179 students.
  14. Up-Coming Series – Elevate, Stimulate, and Cultivate
  15. Elevate will be a youth series which will focus on building skills and will be driven by youth.
  16. The Youth Advisory Board has been meeting and has scheduled events.
  17. Andy Duran has been working with the wellness Teaching Assistants teaching them refusal skills.
  18. November 2, 2016 RiseUP! Refusal Skills Training.
  19. The goal is to teach student leaders so that they teach others.
  20. December 2016 (specific date TBD)Youth Summit.
  21. February 25-26 Lake County Youth Leadership Training.
  22. April 19, 2017 Normalcy? The Truth About Substance use Disorder and Addiction.
  23. Stimulate will be an adult’s series which will inform parents and professionals working with youth on current drug trends and substance use.

  31. Cultivate is our new "transitions series" intended for parents of children of all ages who are dealing with transitions in their family - toddler age to school age; elementary school to middle school; middle school to high school; high school to college.

  33. Several parents showed up but were expecting more of an admissions topic rather than a substance use topic.
  34. (For parents who have a teen who has just transitioned into college, or will be transitioning to college in the coming year.)
  35. October 12, 2016 because of a community conflict we will have Hidden in Plain Sight set up for parents to view at the Gorton Center. Every 30 minutes we will have a guided explanation by staff members.
  36. January 25, 2017 Teenproofing! The Middle School to High School Transition (For parents who will have a middle schooler transitioning to high school)
  37. April 26, 2017 The High School to College Transition – Repeat
  38. Medical Marijuana - Prevention Starts with Parents postcard.
  39. Sonali has been working with a task force on a prevention postcard that will be sent out to parents of teens throughout the county.
  40. It is specifically for marijuana. Parents did not realize that there was an impact.
  41. Dispensaries in Mundelein and Highland Park.
  42. On the 4th of July there were 3 citations (1 did not live here).
  43. The group overall liked the postcard.
  44. The 1st postcard will be on what parents should do and how to talk to teens.
  45. Meg Kincaid commented that the brain continues to develop throughout our lifetime. The message that it develops until age 25 may be too limited.
  46. Elevel the Highland Park dispensary is struggling since there are a limited number of cases which can legally buy.
  47. The 2 ½ oz. every 2 weeks is the problem, since it is much more than a person that needs to use MM can consume.
  48. What happens with the excess?
  49. This is a cash business, and MM is not covered by insurance.
  50. The allowable reasons are expanding to include glaucoma and eczema.
  51. There is a trailer bill that is being put in place to reduce the 2 ½ oz. of MM to 1 oz., as well as providing funds for prevention.
  52. We will be planning a Leaders Luncheon to share the IYS results with the community.
  53. LEAD is considering doing a Turnabout for high school students and planned by the Youth Advisory board.

The next coalition meeting will take place on Thursday, November3rd.
