Someone in my Family Deserves and Award!

By: Brielle Mears

I am proud to say, someone in my family deserves anaward! My grandfather, George Schwebach, is an amazing and an outstanding man. I chose this topic because I enjoy writing about my grandpa and thinking about him. He would be deserving of an award titled “The Best all Around Man!” Well, that’s what I think about him. I know how everyone thinks “their mom is the best mom ever” or they have “the coolest friends ever.” Everyone is right though because, to them they probably are the “best” or the “coolest,” but to me my grandpa is the best!

My grandfather would be so deserving of this award. He has done so much to help the community of Dell Rapids. From all the stories, good and bad, I can remember one the most out of all of them, and that’d be the one when he saves someone’s life! This story starts out in a bar and ends in the book Historic Dell Rapids. First of all, from what I remember my grandpa was maybe in his 20’s. He was in Jack Sheridan’s Pool Hall with a couple of his buddies after a long day of work. They were all sitting up at the bar when a man walked in saying crazy things like “I’m going to kill my wife!” Everyone was in shock. Later they realized that this man had escaped jail that night. Soon the man started picking fights and then eventually he pulled out a gun. The first reaction you have when you have a gun barrel pointed at you, you are probably thinking “Oh my gosh, I don’t want to die.” Well, my grandpa was not going to let anyone die that night. He walked up to the man holding the gun and was trying to be reasonable. Finally, my grandpa grabbed the gun from the man and saved lives that night.

My grandpa is 81 years old and we are lucky to still have him in our lives. A couple of years of ago my grandpa was diagnose with leukemia. Everyone’s hearts were crushed at the sound of the news. He fought and fought for this terrible sickness to go away. We prayed and did everything we could, but it just kept on getting worse. In August of 2007, my grandpa went to the doctor’s office for an appointment; he took my grandma, Lois, also. The doctor walked in and told them some news. My grandparents were suddenly shocked at the doctor’s news. My grandpa was cancer free! I can see the look on my grandparents’ face right now…and I see tears of joy! They were the happiest people in the world at that very moment.

If you are from Dell Rapids, I’m sure you’ve noticed the Veterans’ Memorial Park being built by the Rocky Run Car Wash. Well, my grandpa is building that. He was even building it when he was very sick with the cancer. Although, he had cancer you’d see him out there everyday in the summer slaving in that hot sun working on that beautiful project. He had big plans for the park and they will be finished because my grandfather is committed to the community and always has been. If my grandpa passes away before that park is finished I can guarantee you that I will be there along with the rest of the family completing his dreams.

Grandfather, that’s a word that describes what my grandpa really is. He is the ultimate package, he is grand! That word means: love, family, hope, and strength. I love my grandpa. From the bottom of my heart, I truly think my grandpa would deserve an award for his greatnesses. Now, when you hear the name, George Schwebach, you’ll think, “He is a great man!”
