Subject: RE: Matrix

Carol & David,

I am going to have to miss the call because we will be getting ready to leave for the airport and I need to be a mom today (5 mos. in Morocco—boo hoo). Carolanne suggested that we each take the draft matrix and run some sample chart notes through it. Below are mine, along with my feedback after actually using the process.

First: I apologize, I don’t think this is the latest version—I remember we added in something in that second category, but wasn’t able to track that down.

Some feedback from actually using this: I don’t like the three categories:

(1)  “Lacking” felt really negative—perhaps “Opportunity for Growth” or something more affirming would be better. I found myself very hesitant to use that.

(2)  Similarly “role model” feels almost unachievable. I want to have three usable categories…

Perhaps “Opportunity for Growth,” “Good” and “Outstanding” or “Excellent”?

I chose three notes randomly. The “Role Model” note really isn’t a role model, but it is better than good J. She also did some additional follow up work not reflected here which really made a difference to the patient, including going with me to Guest Relations to advocate for the patient further. That probably colored my assessment.

After doing this, I would use this as a self assessment tool rather than having ME assess. For example, I could see offering time at staff meeting to present one or two with their SELF ASSESSMENT for discussion—sort of like a mini-verbatim process. I think it could be some really good team learning.

Thanks, please pass this on to those on the call. Again, my apologies,

Bev
