APPLYING FOR A JOB

SOME ADVICE ON COMPLETING THE FORM

Because Wyre Forest Nightstopand Mediation Scheme strives to be an equal opportunities employer, the application form plays an important part in the selection process: both in deciding whether or not you will be short listed for an interview and as a basis for the interview itself. The following advice is designed to help you to complete the application form as effectively as possible.

Read the Job Description and Person Specification carefully

  • Every post advertised has a full job description and person specification that will be used to decide which people are interviewed and appointed.
  • The job description sets out the main purpose for the job, and gives you details about the key tasks and responsibilities involved, although this won’t ever be able to cover everything so always be prepared to be flexible in the role.
  • The person specification will list the competencies, knowledge, qualifications, experience and personal qualities required. Some of these will be considered essential – that is, the successful person must have these to be able to perform the job, whereas some will be desirable; this means it would be useful if the successful person also has some of these, but we don’t consider them critical to the role.
  • Before you spend time completing the application form, ask yourself why you are interested in the job. Would it be a good career move; sideways to broaden your experience or promotion if you are ready for more responsibility? (Can you support this?) Can you evidence how you meet at least the essential criteria for the role? Are the terms and conditions, such as the salary, hours of work and location, acceptable to you?

Look at your previous experience

  • Set out your career history: do not go into too much detail but make sure that you explain the main features of each job that you have had.
  • Explaining your present (and previous) jobs to someone else may help to uncover ‘hidden’ skills etc., that you take for granted.
  • Think about whatevidence have you got that illustrates you have the necessary skills, knowledge and experience. Try to clearly provide information that demonstrates your capabilities against each of the criteria listed in the person specification, taking into account the job you are applying for. For example it is easy to say you have had to liaise with clients to identify and respond to their needs but it is more effective to give examples of how you have used these skills and what you have achieved.
  • Consider any relevant experience you have acquired outside of work such as community/voluntary/leisure interests.

Supporting statement and further information

  • This is the section of the application form whereyou make your case for why you want the job.
  • Do support your application by completing the supporting statement section with specific reference to the person specification and job description enclosed.
  • Gear your application to the job: don’t submit the same one for a series of jobs unless it is equally appropriate. Do not simply repeat your career history: pick out the skills, knowledge and experience required by the job and provide evidence that you possess them.
  • Specify and be clear about your own responsibilities rather than those of your team or department.

Review the application form before you submit

Your form should be clear, concise and well organised with examples that help to evidence your experience and competencies.

  • Review your application before you submit to avoid mistakes, repetition etc. This also gives you the opportunity to ensure that your form is well organised and relevant.
  • Check that your employment/education dates are correct, in the right order and explain any gaps in your employment record in the appropriate section.
  • If you are providing details of referees, please ensure that you have checked with them that they consent to you supplying their details.
  • Sign and date your application form before you send it to us; by signing the form you are confirming to us that all the details you’ve given are considered true and accurate. If you email us an electronic form, should you be selected for interview you will be asked to sign the application form when you attend the interview.

Please do not send your CV in place of completing any sections of the application form as CVs will not be put forward for shortlisting.
