JOB TITLE:Youth Worker Leadership

RESPONSIBLE FOR: Trainers and Volunteers
SALARY:£14,820- £15,721.30 per year.
HOURS OF WORK:17.5 hours per week
ANNUAL LEAVE:22 days per year
JOB SUMMARY
To lead a team of volunteers and trainers in the provision of leadership activities that meet the needs of Somali young people in generally in the London Borough of Camden, particularly those who are at risk, disaffected, persistent truants, excluded, unemployed or within the youth justice system.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES
- To co-ordinate outreach work among Somali young people in the borough to recruit onto the Leadership Project
- To develop a programme of Leadership activities for Somali young people and other young people.
- To co-ordinate a programme of Leadership activities for Somali young people and other young people, including sourcing workshop trainers and speakers
- To liaise with services and agencies in the area working for the benefit of young people to identify volunteering opportunities
- To ensure that Somali young people have a say in, and their needs are met by any future development of services by SYDRC.
GENERAL DUTIES
SUPERVISION
- Lead regular team meetings and hold regular individual support and supervision sessions with sessional youth workers and SYDRC volunteers
- Ensure all SYDRC activities and outings are adequately staffed
WORKING WITH SOMALI YOUNG PEOPLE
- Hold regular meetings with representative groups of Somali youngpeople.
- Develop and deliver SYDRC programme of Leadership activities in consultation with Somali young people
LEADERSHIP WORKSHOPS AND SESSIONS
- Organise Leadership workshops and sessions with Somali young people which may take place at the offices of SYDRC or at other locations within the community
- Organise follow up work arising from the sessions, including referrals to other agencies
- Organise volunteering opportunities and annual residential courses to build on leadership skills
- To support youth-led community based initiatives
ADMINISTRATION
- Record and collect statistics on work with Somali young people using SYDRC systems
- Submit and present reports to the SYDRC Director, Management Committee and project funders.
- Keep accurate confidential case records
- Keep up to date with relevant legislation, policies and practices
- Build up the resources of information necessary for successful youth advice work
FINANCE
- Ensure the project operates within budget and, where necessary, fund raise to ensure its continued success.
- Experience of managing budgetsand maintaining financial accountability
LIAISON
- Represent SYDRC and maintain links with other agencies, community and umbrella groups as directed by SYDRC Director and Management Committee
HEALTH & SAFETY
- Ensure that all appropriate measures are taken with regard to the health and safety of all people working at, using, or visiting any of SYDRC facilities, services or activities, both on and off site.
- To ensure action is taken to eliminate any reported hazards to health and safety.
GENERAL DUTIES
- Attend staff meetings
- Attend appropriate training courses.
- Participate in supervision and appraisal meetings
- Be administratively self servicing
- Participate in office rotas as necessary

Priorities and responsibilities may vary from time to time as SYDRC service delivery changes. Any review and subsequent changes will be done in consultation and in agreement with the post holder.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
QUALIFICATIONS
- NVQ Level 3 or above in Youth Work or Advice Work or an equivalent level of experience together with a willingness to undertake formal training.
EXPERIENCE
- Working with young people in general and in particularly Somali young and have good concept about the Somali youth in Camden.
- General advice work, particularly giving advice to young people, refugees and asylum seekers
- Supervising staff, trainers and / or volunteers
- Working / liasing with other organisations on the delivery of projects
- Developing and delivering workshops and sessions targeting young people
- Experience of planning, monitoring and evaluating programmes
- Experience of planning and developing high quality, outcome-based youth provision, appropriate for the differing needs and abilities of a range of young people.
KNOWLEDGE
- Issues affecting Somali young people especially within multi racial inner city settings
- Education and training needs of Somali young people, including school exclusions
- Issues faced by young people regarding the criminal justice system
- An understanding of current youth policy, including participation, volunteering, community safety, and raising achievement and aspirations
SKILLS / ABILITIES
- Ability to speak and write Somali to a good standard/desirable
- Ability to communicate effectively with young people and adults on a one to one basis and in groups.
- Ability to implement equal opportunities practices
- Ability to maintain accurate and concise records
- Ability to work as part of a team
- IT skills
- Willingness to undertake a range of administrative tasks
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
RATES OF PAY
Equivalent to JNC Youth and Community Workers pay scale 1.4 including Inner London Weightingappropriate increments and cost of living increases will apply.
HOURS / T.O.I.L.
17.5 hours per week. The post will involve regular evening work and some week-end work. Where additional hours are worked, no overtime will be paid, but time off in lieu may be taken instead.
HOLIDAYS
22 days per annum, plus bank holidays.
LINES OF RESPONSIBILITY
The Youth Worker – Leadership will be employed by and will report to the Management Committee of SYDRC and the Director.
The Youth Worker - Leadership will be line managed by the SYDRC Director.
The Youth Worker - Leadership will line manage trainers andSYDRC volunteers.
The Management Committee of SYDRC will be responsible for determining the overall direction and setting overall priorities for the project.
REFERENCES / CRB CHECKS
Because this post will involve working with children, under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exemption Order 1975) and the Children Act 1989, post holders will not be entitled to withhold information about any criminal convictions they might have, including those committed whilst a juvenile, which for other purposes are regarded as ‘spent’. Whilst we are committed to offering opportunities to ex-offenders, certain convictions may prohibit working with children.
