Specifier Notes: This product guide specification is written according to the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) 3-Part Format, including MasterFormat, SectionFormat, and PageFormat, as described in The CSI Construction Specifications Practice Guide.

This section must be carefully reviewed and edited by the Architect or Engineer to meet the requirements of the project and local building code. Coordinate this section with other specification sections and the Drawings. Delete all “Specifier Notes” after editing this section.

SECTION 06 16 36

OSB RADIANT BARRIER SHEATHING

Specifier Notes: This section covers Norbord “Solarbord” structural, oriented strand board (OSB) radiant barrier sheathing panels. “Solarbord” is made of heat-reflective aluminum foil laminated onto OSB panels. The panels are installed on roofs and gables with foil side facing the attic.

“Solarbord” OSB radiant barrier sheathing panels may contribute to LEED credits, Energy Star, or qualify to receive points toward National Green Building Certification. Consult Norbord for more information.

PART 1  GENERAL

1.1  SECTION INCLUDES

A.  Structural, oriented strand board (OSB) radiant barrier sheathing panels.

1.4  PREINSTALLATION MEETINGS

Specifier Notes: Edit preinstallation meetings as necessary. Delete if not required.

A.  Convene preinstallation meeting [1 week] [2 weeks] before start of installation of OSB radiant barrier sheathing panels.

B.  Require attendance of parties directly affecting work of this section, including Contractor, Architect, Engineer, and installer.

C.  Review materials, preparation, installation, protection, and coordination with other work.

1.5  SUBMITTALS

A.  Comply with Section 01 33 00 – Submittal Procedures.

B.  Product Data: Submit manufacturer’s product data, including installation instructions.

C.  Manufacturer’s Certification: Submit manufacturer’s certification that materials comply with specified requirements and are suitable for intended application.

D.  Warranty Documentation: Submit manufacturer’s standard warranty.

1.6  QUALITY ASSURANCE

A.  Manufacturer’s Qualifications: Manufacturer regularly engaged, for past 10 years, in manufacture of OSB radiant barrier sheathing panels of similar type to that specified.

B.  Installer's Qualifications:

1.  Installer regularly engaged, for past 5 years, in installation of OSB radiant barrier sheathing panels of similar type to that specified.

2.  Employ persons trained for installation of OSB radiant barrier sheathing panels.

1.7  DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

A.  Delivery Requirements:

1.  Deliver materials to site with labels clearly identifying product name and manufacturer.

2.  Ensure OSB radiant barrier sheathing panels are identified by the following:

a.  Label or stamp bearing manufacturer’s name or trademark.

b.  APA assigned plant number.

c.  Panel thickness.

d.  Panel span rating.

e.  APA logo.

f.  Date of manufacture.

B.  Storage and Handling Requirements:

Specifier Notes: The Exposure 1 exposure durability classification of Norbord OSB indicates that unprotected exposure during ordinary construction periods will not adversely affect the structural properties. Exposure to adverse moisture conditions could result in edge swell. Sanding may be required to level uneven edges before finish-covering application.

1.  Store and handle materials in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.

2.  Store OSB panels flat, indoors or under cover, protected from weather.

3.  Keep OSB panels off ground on flat base, if stored outdoors.

4.  Do not expose OSB panels to weather or moisture on a continuous basis.

5.  Cover OSB panels loosely to allow air circulation at sides.

6.  Align blocking/supports to prevent warping, if OSB panels are stacked.

7.  Place full-width blocking 6 inches from each end and at 24-inch intervals over length of unit.

8.  Use inventories of OSB panels on first-in, first-out basis.

9.  Protect materials during storage, handling, and installation to prevent damage.

1.8  WARRANTY

A.  Warranty Period: 25 years from date of manufacture.

PART 2  PRODUCTS

2.1  MANUFACTURER

2.2  DESIGN CRITERIA

Specifier Notes: Specify additional design criteria as necessary. Edit the following as required for the project.

A.  Roofs and gables shall be sheathed with OSB radiant barrier sheathing panels.

B.  Design and install wood-framed structure by one of the following:

1.  Local building code.

2.  Wood Frame Construction Manual (WFCM).

3.  ICC 600.

4.  ASCE 7.

2.3  OSB RADIANT BARRIER SHEATHING

A.  OSB Radiant Barrier Sheathing Panels: “Solarbord”.

1.  Description:

a.  Structural, oriented strand board (OSB) radiant barrier sheathing panels.

b.  Heat-reflective aluminum foil laminated onto OSB panels.

2.  Certification:

a.  APA - The Engineered Wood Association, in compliance with APA PRP-108 and carrying APA grade stamp and reference to NER-108 and PS 2.

Specifier Notes: Delete SFI Chain-of-Custody Certification if not required.

b.  SFI Chain-of-Custody Certification.

c.  Home Innovation NGBS Green Certified.

3.  Bond Classification, PS 2: Exposure 1.

4.  Nominal Panel Size: 4 feet by 8 feet.

Specifier Notes: Specify panel thickness.

5.  Panel Thickness: [7/16 inches] [15/32 inches] [19/32 inches] [As indicated on the Drawings].

6.  Panel Edges: Sealed.

7.  Does not contain added urea-formaldehyde resins.

2.4  ACCESSORIES

PART 3  EXECUTION

3.1  EXAMINATION

A.  Examine areas to receive OSB radiant barrier sheathing panels.

B.  Notify Architect of conditions that would adversely affect installation.

C.  Do not begin installation until unacceptable conditions are corrected.

3.2  PREPARATION

A.  Acclimate OSB radiant barrier sheathing panels to surroundings for a minimum of 24 hours before installation.

3.3  INSTALLATION

A.  Install OSB radiant barrier sheathing panels in accordance with manufacturer's instructions, local building code, fasteners schedule, and as specified in this section.

B.  Install OSB radiant barrier sheathing panels at locations indicated on the Drawings.

C.  Installation on Roofs:

1.  Verify rafter truss alignment is uniform and square.

2.  Place OSB radiant barrier sheathing panels on rafters with foil side facing down, toward attic space.

3.  Allow a minimum of 1/8-inch spacing between ends and edges of OSB radiant barrier sheathing panels.

4.  Do not allow insulation or other materials to come in contact with foil surface of OSB radiant barrier sheathing panels.

5.  Maintain minimum 3/4-inch air space between foil surface of OSB radiant barrier sheathing panels and other building materials in attic.

6.  Use nails to fasten OSB radiant barrier sheathing panels to rafters at a maximum spacing of 6 inches on center at supported panel ends and edges, and 12 inches on center at intermediate supports.

7.  Protect OSB radiant barrier sheathing panels from moisture before and during installation.

8.  Cover roof as soon as possible with shingle underlayment or #15 roofing felt to protect OSB radiant barrier sheathing panels from weather.

9.  Cover OSB radiant barrier sheathing panels with #30 roofing felt, if construction delays are anticipated.

D.  Installation on Gables:

1.  Verify support alignment is uniform and square.

2.  Install OSB radiant barrier sheathing panels with foil side facing in, toward attic space.

3.  Maintain 1/8-inch spacing between ends and edges of OSB radiant barrier sheathing panels.

4.  Maintain minimum 3/4-inch air space between foil surface of OSB radiant barrier sheathing panels and other building materials in attic.

5.  Protect OSB radiant barrier sheathing panels from moisture before, during, and after installation.

Specifier Notes: Specify required nail spacing at panel edges.

E.  Nail Spacing at Panel Edges: [______inches] [As indicated on the Drawings].

F.  Install nails a minimum of 3/8 inch from panel edges.

Specifier Notes: Consult local building code for minimum nail penetration into framing.
