Social Work Reading List 2011

The following reading list gives recommendations by module leaders for books that would be useful for courses in the first year. Academic books are expensive, so if you want to buy any to read it is probably best to stick to one or two until you start the course. Most local libraries will be able to order copies of books for you if they do not have them in stock. You can buy some books second hand on websites like Amazon. It is best to avoid buying second hand copies of law or social policy books as these go out of date very quickly.

It will also be helpful to you, to begin thinking about current issues in social policy and social work. Try to read a good newspaper regularly; the “Society” section, published each Wednesday in The Guardian is particularly relevant to social work.
