Social Studies Aug. 13-17
Monday---Unit 1 School Days
Teacher will introduce the unit by link prior learning, anticipation guide, and preview vocabulary activities on teacher’s guide pg. 6 and personal response pg. 7, also big book these pages.
Preview the Unit: Think About Words (school, teacher, map, group, rule), Definitions, and Work With Words teacher’s guide and Big book pgs. 8-9.
Set the Scene With Literature: poem, “First Day of School” by Aileen Fisher Preview, Read and Respond teacher’s guide and Big Book pgs. 10-11.
Tuesday---Unit 1 Lesson 1: I Learn At School
Big Book and teacher’s guide pgs. 12-13
Vocabulary: learn
Students will read text, observe pictures, and discuss to recognize tools for learning in the classroom, interpret pictures and text, and identify the main idea of a social studies lesson.
Wednesday---Unit 1 Lesson 2: My Classroom
Big Book and teacher’s guide pgs. 14-15
Vocabulary: teacher, friend
Students will read text, observe pictures, and discuss to define school as a place for learning, describe the role of self as a member of a class, and recognize the value of positive interactions with friends, classmates, and teachers and other school workers.
If time permits, have students write a friendly letter to someone in their family about their school, teacher, and friends like Megan did in her letter on page. 15.
Thursday---Unit 1 Skills Lesson: Learn From a Picture and a Map
Big Book and teacher’s guide pg. 16-17
Vocabulary: map
Students will read text, observe pictures, and discuss to use relative location words to describe where things are in a classroom, compare eye-level and aerial views of a classroom, compare a map to an aerial view, and demonstrate mapping an aerial view.
Friday---We may also have students visiting the library during this time. So instead of completing a social studies lesson during this time, we will reread the story, “The Hat” in our student reading blue textbook and use construction paper to make a hat.
