Soccer Rules Study Guide

·  A standard game of soccer is played 11 v 11 players

o  10 of these players are field players and 1 player is the goalie

o  In Diamond/Clarke PE we typically play 6 v 6

·  To start the game, one team does a KICKOFF - the ball is placed in the center of the midfield line and each team is on their respective sides. One player starts by kicking the ball FORWARD. The player who did the kickoff cannot touch the ball until another player does.

·  Each team is trying to SCORE A GOAL on the other team’s GOAL (net at the end of the field). Each goal is worth one point for the scoring team.

o  SAFETY – Be respectful of the goalie when shooting (not too hard, keep it close to the ground)

·  The only player who can use his/her hands on the playing field is the GOALIE.

o  The goalie must be INSIDE the PENALTY BOX (big box around the goal) to use his/her hands on the ball.

o  The goalie protects his/her team’s net by blocking the ball from going in.

·  Players are encouraged to dribble with both feet.

·  THROW-IN – when the ball goes out of bounds on the sidelines, the team who did not touch it last does a throw-in to put the ball back in play.

o  You must keep both feet on the ground during a throw-in.

o  You must use two hands and throw the ball straight over your head.

·  TRAP – using your foot to stop or control the ball.

·  CORNER KICK – when the ball goes out of bounds at the end line off of the defensive team’s foot, the offensive team kicks the ball into play from the closest corner of the field.

·  GOAL KICK – when the ball goes out of bounds at the end line off of the offensive team’s foot, the defensive team kicks the ball into play from the top corner of the goal box.

·  NO SLIDE TACKLING, SHOVING, or ROUGH HOUSING!!
