Interpret Graphic Information
TABE Reading
Learner Levels E & M
Day 4
Overview & Purpose / This is Part #3 of a 5-Day lesson plan designed for whole group and individual instruction for students who did not reach mastery level (80%+) of Interpret Graphic Information portion of the pre-TABE on Reading Levels E & M. The focus is reading and interpreting basic maps, charts, tables, graphs, and photographs.
Objectives & Standards / CCSS.ELA-Literarcy.RI.3.7 – Use information gained from illustrations (e.g., maps, photographs) and the words in a text to demonstrate understanding of the text (e.g., where, when, why, and how key events occur).
The students will be able to read and interpret information presented in maps, charts, graphs, and photographs
Materials /
  1. Smartboard (preferred) or can be projected onto white board/screen
  2. Teacher computer with internet
  3. Student Personal White Boards (dry erase boards or create your own with sheet protectors and colored paper)
  4. Dry erase markers for students

Information Delivery / Before the Lesson
  1. Identify students who have not mastered Interpret Graphic Information section of TABE Reading
  2. View and be familiar with ALL links BEFORE presenting to the class.
  3. NOTE: This lesson plan is NOT inclusive of all types of graphic material presented on the pre- or post-TABE tests. See hyperlinks on the schedule for additional materials.
During the Lesson
  1. The students will use the same note taking sheet from Days #1-3.
  2. Ask students to complete the sentence, “A Picture Is Worth ______.” Ask if anyone knows the origin. The teacher will present “A Picture is Worth 1,000 Words” to tell the real origin of the phrase (side topic – idioms).
  3. The teacher will present Communicating Information Using Pictures, Graphs, & Charts 3
  4. The teacher will give students guiding questions to complete DIAGRAMS & PHOTOGRAPHS portion of note taking sheet.
  5. As a class, complete the practice questions. (Suggested quizzing strategy – Personal white boards. Have students write their answers on their boards/sheets and hold up for teacher to assess understanding.)

  1. List 5 science, social studies, or news related topics that may require a diagram or photograph to help a reader understand.

Additional Suggested Resources for Generating Assessment Questions /
  1. Pre-GED Science textbook: From textbooks already on-hand, choose simple questions with diagrams, charts, graphs, etc. Choose visuals with accompanying passages only if using for other reading categories as well.
  2. Pre-GED Social Studies textbook: From textbooks already on-hand, choose simple questions with maps and photographs. Political cartoons are NOT assessed on Levels E & M of TABE. Choose visuals with accompanying passages only if using for other reading categories as well.
