8.30am / Welcome to Helicopter Base / Steve Leahy / Steve will welcome us to the Helicopter Base and will provide some insights into his leadership journey in Surf Life Saving.
9.00am / Guest Speaker / Shane Fitzsimmons / Shane Fitzsimmons AFSM is the Commissioner of the NSW Rural Fire Service. He joined the service as a volunteer member in 1985. He is a dedicated firefighter with over 20 years’ experience in emergency services management.
Commissioner Fitzsimmons was awarded the Australian Fire Service Medal in 2001 and is a recipient of the National Medal and the RFS Long Service Award for 15 years active service and is a life member of the Duffys Forest Brigade.
Commissioner Fitzsimmons will share his own leadership approach to his role, the responsibilities, challenges and attitude he has adopted.

/ John Fitzgerald / What is ‘leadership’? Whilst leadership is a well used term, what does it mean and how can we go about enacting leadership? This session will explore some thinking about leadership and the uniqueopportunities offered by surf life saving.

  1. Traditional leadership views and the need to change
  2. Leadership as process
  3. Requisite leadership capacities
  4. Leadership purpose – the why?
  5. SLSA as a leadership cauldron

This session will continue the shared experience exercise and then link these to the Be-Do-Have framework
2.15pm / Leadership Commitment - Mastery or Dabbling? / Kevin Larkins / How serious are you about your leadership efforts? Do you ‘dabble’ around the edges, or are you focused on committing to ‘mastery’ of leadership skills. Kevin will introduce the concepts of Mastery and Dabbling, and will provide you with thinking tools that may challenge your thinking in relation to these two concepts.

3.30pm / Dynamics of leadership and teamwork / Nancy Joseph / We all have our personalised approaches to leadership. What are your preferred approaches to leadership? How do you go about enacting leadership? Nancy will provide some analysis tools that will enable you to explore your preferred approaches to leadership. She will do this by inviting you to consider the following questions and in the process share her extensive leadership experience:
  1. What is my leadership profile?
  2. How does it relate to my leadership?
  3. How does this impact on my understanding of others?
  4. How does all this impact on teamwork?

This session will look at :
(a)How our sense of self is central to all we do in leadership
(b)How we as individuals connect with ideas and people
(c)How leadership takes place in the spaces between people
(d)Why leadership is SLS as a shared process
(e)How can we connect with others in ways that motivate and engage with personal goals?

Will explore how greater gender awareness and leadership diversity is creating improved innovation and delivery.

11.00am / Be/Do/Have / Kevin Larkins / John Fitzgerald / Kevin and John will explore the mantra of Be/Do/Have. How do your actions reflect who you are? How do these actions reflect your values? How do your values impact upon what you do?It’s not what you do, but who you are. Your values are the only personal constant in an uncertain and ever changing environment. This will be an activity to assist participants to explore their values and how they may use these when under pressure and in unknown territory.

1.30pm / Guest Speaker / Suzanne Young / Suzanne joined SLS through North Bondi SLSC where she held the roles of Chief Instructor and Club Captain and was an active competitor. Suzanne’s achievements were recognized in 1996 when she was awarded the Sydney Branch, SLSNSW Lifesaver of the Year and Australian Lifesaver of the Year. Suzanne is now a member a member of both North Bondi and Clovelly SLSC; at Clovelly she was an age manager for Nippers for 9 years and now runs a program for cadets.
Suzanne is the Chief Operating Officerfor the National Rugby League (NRL). Previously she was a Director on the SLSA Board
Prior to joining the NRL in November 2014, Suzanne held senior executive and non-executive director roles across a range of industries and regulated sectors. She has broad leadership and operational experience spanning financial services, aviation, technology, not-for-profit/sport and professional services across Australia, New Zealand, Asia, Europe and the US.
She has successfully led customer focused, strategic change initiatives in large organisations, including Leighton Holdings, The Commonwealth Bank, Qantas and Unisys, utilising technology and grass roots engagement of diverse teams to deliver sustainable growth and improvements to the bottom-line.
In 2009 and 2010, Suzanne she was awarded Industry Thought Leader by the Shared Services and Outsourcing Network for Asia Pacific and in 2011, she was shortlisted for the FINSIA Pinnacle Awards Most Outstanding Future Leader.
Suzanne has a Bachelor of Economics, a Masters of Taxation, a Masters of Accounting, is a CPA and a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

3.30pm / Abundance or Scarcity / Kevin Larkins/Nancy Joseph / In society we are all being asked to do more with less. This can be seen as an outcome of getting better at what we do. It is the same with organisations. Clubs need to look at how they can do more with less.
This session is an open forum to discuss and share experiences of clubs doing more with less.

John Fitzgerald / Leadership shifts mindsets to create a better future. This assumes that we understand how people change their minds.
John will explore a practical thinking tool to assist leaders in their approach to helping people open their minds to change.
He will do this by understanding
  1. how people change their mind
  2. a ‘buy-in scale’ for change engagement
  3. how we can use this understanding as a catalyst for change
  4. applying this tool to a relevant issue from your club

Kevin Larkins / Leaders are alone at many times in their leadership activity. They are reliant on their ability to self motivate and self activate to continue their leadership journey. In short, they must be resilient when the going gets tough.
This session will explore ...
a)what does it mean to be resilient?
b)how do you maintain your personal resiliency?
c)how do you recharge your leadership batteries?

10.10am / Taking Action / Nancy Joseph / How to effect change by changing your own responses and taking action.
10.40am / Where to from here? / Kevin Larkins / So what next? Kevin Larkins will challenge participants to commit to taking action back in their clubs. Participants’ will be asked to imagine their best year yet and then consider how they will achieve this.
