V.New business

A.Mentally Challenged Patrons Visiting the Library

Anaheim PL- The library has a sign in sheet for groups, and has time slots for groups. The library will limit library privileges for groups that do not follow library rules.

OCPL –The library contacts managing agencies of groups visiting the library. The library asks for the cellphone number of the Life Coach in order to contact them. The library has a sign in sheet for groups, this is used to compile statistics that are present to the Council.

Orange PL – The library has a brochure that they distribute to Life Coaches regarding expectations when using the library. This brochure will be shared with other libraries.

Fullerton Library – The library offers activities for the groups at the library. The library actively communicates with the groups to plan appropriate activities, and some speak at the Council regarding their library experience.

Newport Beach Library – The library does not have a number of groups visiting the library. The library requires that same sex Life Coaches accompany their clients into the rest rooms.

Huntington Beach Library –The library has had challenges in controlling groups due to the library’s size. The security department is more knowledgeable about any issues with these groups.

Volunteers at the Library

Huntington Beach – Has a Volunteer Coordinator and uses Volgistics for efficiency. The library runs background checks and fingerprinting is required, to be paid for by the volunteer. The volunteers that go through the process tend to be more committed and professional. The library is planning to hold quarterly meetings and training sessions.

OCPL – Volunteers are subject to a background check and must provide a SSN and fill out a “long form.” When creating a Volunteer Match profile, adding a picture to each page is recommended.

Yorba LindaLibrary – The library utilizes Teenvolunteers for the Summer Reading Program.

Newport Beach Library – Teen volunteers are used for shelving, cutting out crafts and the SRP. The Adult Volunteers are used for the Homebound Program, the Library Bookstore and the Literacy Program. The volunteers commit to a background check and fingerprinting.

Orange Library – The library uses volunteers for the Local History Collection, Computer Center and the Information Desk on the first floor. The library needs to limit the number of teen volunteers, due to high demand. The volunteers are subject to a background check.

Anaheim Library –The library has a volunteer arrangement with the ROP and a local technical college, this saves the cost of having to do background checks and fingerprinting. The library does not use adults for the Children’s activities. Quarterly training sessions are held for the volunteers.

Placentia Library – The library requires volunteers to be fingerprinted that work with children. The Adult volunteers work with the Literacy program, local history, and computer assistance. The volunteers need to commit to 120 hours at the library and attend an orientation. month.

Mission Viejo Library – The library has a few volunteers in Technical Services, most work at the bookstore. The Teens only work at the library during the summer months, and if a teen bring a gently used bag of books they receive one hour of service. The library’s Amazon website operation is run by volunteers.

Buena Park Library – The library does not require a background check and uses adult volunteers in the Bookstore and Computer Center. Teens do various activities for the Children’s Department.

  1. Reference Collection:

Fullerton Library – A large portion of the collection is in storage, and the current collection is being revaluate. The library has a program with the local high school that familiarizes the students with the print reference sources.

Huntington Beach Library – The staff has noticed that the Reference Collection is not being used by patrons.

Newport Beach Library – The Library still has a large print collection and is evaluating a program by ProQuest to upload the collection electronically. A recent study showed that the Reference books were only being reshelved six to seven times a month.

Yorba Linda – The library purged ¾ of the collection and interfiled them. and tThe remaining books were placed in circulation.

Placentia – The library has about 1 ½ shelves of Reference material that is being interfiled.. The remainder of the collection was made circulating.

OCPL (GGR) – The library weeded over 90% of the Reference Collection.

Mission Viejo Library – The Reference Collection is interfiled with the Circulating Collection.

Buena Park –The library has a small Reference Collection after several weeding projects.

  1. Roundtable

APL – The library participated at WonderCon, and had 25 library card signups. This year, the library will begin an Adult Summer Reading Program.

OPL – The library has partnered with Fullerton to have a joint book event, “Tales of Two Cities”. The title is the new book by Harper Lee.

FPL – The library has begun to promote their Makerspace, one event featured taking the 3-D printer to a Chamber Mixer.

PLD – The library has moved will be moving to toa 1 desk point of service, and promotes the use of self –checkout machines. The library continues to hold a number of programs, including yoga.

HBPL – The library will no longer charge a fee for library cards for non-residents. There will be a replacement of the material handling equipment and a large 40th Anniversary part.

YLPL- The library will hold a one author event, celebrating Agatha Christie and will feature a performance by the Chance Theatre actors portraying the Christie characters.

MVPL – The library had the “Fancy Nancy” bus come to the library, and it was a big success. It has also had several noted writers come to speak at the library.

BPL – The library will hold its “One Book, One City” event in April, featuring the book, “The Invention of Wings.”One of the activities will be patrons creating a personal square to be part of a story quilt that will be hung in the library, in keeping with the theme of the novel.
