This policy applies to all employees, volunteers, Board members, contractors and visitors.

Commitment Statement

This organization is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for all staff. Our organization will demonstrate its commitment to preventing slips and falls by providing financial, physical and human resources to ensure that all staff understand and are aware of the risks associated with slips and falls in the workplace. In the interest of working safely, everyone in the workplace is required to follow all health and safety procedures that are related to slips and falls.

Goals

  • Reduce or eliminate all slip and fall injuries
  • Increase hazard awareness in the workplace to prevent slip and fall incidents and injuries
  • Outline safe work practices

Responsibilities

Preventing slips and falls is the responsibility of everyone in the workplace. Employers are legally required to take every reasonable precaution to protect employees in the workplace, as well as inform staff about any potential job hazards. Supervisors are required to inform all employees about hazards on the job. Employees are required to follow the policies and procedures set out by the employer.

The organization is also committed to protecting the health and well-being of its staff, Board members, contractors and visitors. As such, the organization will take the necessary steps to protect all such individuals and safeguard against liability.

  • The organization will orient and train all new employees and volunteers on the slip and fall prevention practices.
  • The JHSC/HSR will conduct monthly workplace inspections to verify that procedures already in place are being followed and will identify any further slip and fall hazards. The JHSC/HSR shall make recommendations to the Administrator/CEO as required.
  • Supervisors and managers will ensure that all their staff, including voluntary and student staff, receive information on potential hazards.
  • Staff are responsible for ensuring that their visitors (contractor, volunteer, guest, Board member, student) are aware of general safety rules of the slip and fall prevention program.
  • All management staff will investigate all near misses, first aid and lost time injuries related to slip and fall hazards.

Annual Review

The slip and fall prevention program will be reviewed annually in conjunction with the JHSC/HSR.
