Slavery Synthesis Essay Prompt

I. Introduction:

We’ve recently finished Frederick Douglass’ moving Narrative. In addition, we’ve also seen excerpts from Django Unchained, read selections from The State of Human Trafficking in California, and we saw a lecture by Sunitha Krishnan. As we’ve read, watched, and studied these diverse sources, we’ve discussed the dehumanizing effects of slavery. Now you have an opportunity to synthesize your findings in a cohesive, well-written essay.

II. Prompt:

Please respond to the following prompt:

According to the sources presented in class, what are the effects of slavery? (In your response, consider the effects on both the slave holder and the slave.) What techniques or strategies are employed by the slave holder? How are these practices destructive for both the slave holder and the slave?

Note: Your essay must reference three of the four sources presented in class, including The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass.

III. Remember the Following:

As you write your paper, remember the following details:

1.  Type your essay in Times New Roman twelve-point font.

2.  You only need to reference three sources in the essay, and one of them MUST be Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass.

3.  Provide at least two quotations, or paraphrases, for every body paragraph.

4.  Present a brief lead-in (introduction) prior to inserting quotations or paraphrases.

5.  Provide a minimum of two comments after each example.

6.  Type a properly formatted Works Cited page with at least three entries.

7.  Proofread your essay and carefully check for spelling and grammar errors.

8.  Optional: While a counterclaim paragraph isn’t necessary, consider why people are callous, indifferent, or insensitive on this topic.
