Part I – Student Application Form

The John E. Skinner Memorial Fund was established in memory of John Skinner, former Chapter and Western Division American Fisheries Society President. The fund provides monetary travel awards for deserving graduate students or exceptional undergraduate students to attend the American Fisheries Society (AFS) Annual Meeting. The 2014 meeting will be held August 17th through the 21st in Québec City, Québec, Canada.

Any student who is active in fisheries or related aquatic disciplines, and has not previously won a full Skinner award, is eligible to apply. Awardees are chosen by a committee of the AFS Education Section. Selection is based on academic qualifications, professional service, and reasons for attending the meeting. Travel support up to US$800.00 will be made available to successful applicants. Award winners will also receive a one-year paid membership to the American Fisheries Society.

Both part I (student form) and part II (advisor form) of the completed application must be received no later than 31 March 2014 at midnight CDT. Note that parts I and II of the application are separate documents. This is Part I of the application and should be filled out by the applicant. Limit all answers to the space provided. 2014 Application Form and Instructions- Skinner Memorial Award

Use this form to apply for the Skinner Memorial Award – 2014 Annual Meeting of the American Fisheries Society, Québec City, Québec, Canada, August 17-21. Additional information regarding the John E. Skinner Memorial Award can be found at www.fisheries.org.

There are two parts to the application. The student applicant fills out this section (Part I) of the form. Part II of the application is a separate document and should be completed by the applicant’s major advisor. The advisor should send Part II of the form separately from the applicant. Specific Instructions:

·  Each field below has a limit on the number of characters (regardless of the size of the box). Additional material will NOT be considered.

·  You will be evaluated based on four criteria: 1) AFS involvement, 2) Professionalism and leadership, 3) Reason to attend the Annual Meeting, and 4) Faculty advisor’s input from Part II. All four criteria are weighted equally.

·  There are two parts to the application: Part I is to be filled out by the applicant; Part II by the faculty advisor. The faculty advisor is required to send his/her section under a separate cover.

·  A written signature is not required. Please type your name in the signature line to certify the application.

·  NOTE: Upon receiving your application, the Skinner Committee chair will acknowledge that your application has been received via email. If you do not receive this email within 5 days of submitting your application, it is your responsibility to contact the Skinner Committee chair to ensure that your application was received.

Guidelines to Part I:

AFS involvement: Describe your involvement in AFS chapters, sections, and divisions. Please indicate the levels of AFS to which you currently belong, the positions you currently hold (committee member, elected position, etc.), and any positions you have held in the past.

Professionalism and leadership: Describe your professionalism and leadership that make you an outstanding candidate for this award. This may include (but is not limited to): presentations and publications, memberships in other societies and/or committees (AFS involvement will be described in the AFS involvement section), manuscript reviews, symposia, awards, and other outreach activities.

Reason to attend: Indicate your reason to attend the AFS Annual Meeting. This may include (but is not limited to) attending a symposium or workshop, presenting a paper or poster, attending a committee or technical meeting, networking for job and graduate school opportunities, etc.
