Five students from AMCHS traveled to Kansas City, MO from June 20th - 28th, to compete in the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference. The students participated in eight days of Leadership training and competitions.

Sarah Ann Porter competed for two days against 30 other students from across the United States and placed 6th overall. She had to install virtual computers and operating systems, manage remote connections and create spreadsheets, program Access databases, configure email and create and present proposals.

Sarah Ann also was recognized at the Opening Ceremony for receiving the Presidential Volunteer Service Award. She volunteered over 100 hours of volunteer service that was recognized with a pin and a letter from President Obama.

In addition to the competitions, four students were nominated as Official Voting Delegates and represented the Great State of Texas in the SkillsUSA National Delegate meeting. David Holbrook, Patrick Diaz, Bryce Huebner and Amanda Herrera were able successfully support our Texas Candidates and voted in two National Officers. This increased the record of having a Texas Representative in the National Office for the past 35 years.

Our students were also recorded for the new opening scene to Mike Rowe’s new TV Series: “Somebody has to do it” at the closing awards ceremony at Kemper Arena on Friday June 27th.

The SkillsUSA NLSC event held over 13,000 students, advisors and volunteers in attendance from all fifty states and territories including Puerto Rico, Guam and the Virgin Islands. Students competed in 99 different events making SkillsUSA the largest skilled and technical contest in the Nation. SkillsUSA was named one of the top 10 public to private industry partnerships and the NLSC event boasts to have the single biggest day of corporate volunteerism in America. In addition, students ran the National Delegation meetings, attended SkillsUSA University and LEVERAGE Training, participated in a day of service to Kansas City, traveled to Worlds of Fun Amusement park and represented CSISD with great pride.
