Sixth Grade Science Overview

Mr. Dadante, Mr. Ehrbar, Mr. Newsome

Here is some important information about science class this year.

  1. Daily Materials – What do I need everyday in science?

Each day you will be asked to bring “regular materials” to class. These materials are:

  • MayfieldMiddle School Agenda
  • Science folder dedicated to science only
  • Science notebook dedicated to science only
  • Pencil pouch
  • Science books (as needed)
  1. Science Folder

Science students will be using two-pocket folders to hold all science worksheets, handouts, lab investigations, etc. When a new unit of study begins, students will be required to bring a new two-pocket folder or empty their existing folder.

  1. Learning targets are written as “I can” statements and posted in the classroom.

Example: I can describe two categories of energy (potential and kinetic).

Checkpoints: Checkpoints may be given weekly and are used to assess individual mastery of a learning target. Students who did not master the learning target will be given multiple opportunities to reach a proficient level.

Though many students believe that a teacher gives agrade, the truth is that the student earns their own grade. You have many opportunities in science to be successful – study guides, online practice tests, assignment corrections, Intervention help, etc. Make this year your best ever in science. You determine your own destiny!

  1. Science Units

Scientific Inquiry (Nature of Science) / Rocks, Minerals, and Soil

Matter
  1. Lab Safety

All students will be expected to follow lab safety rules. Lab safety rules will be explained before each lab. Students that follow rules consistently ensure a safe environment and will be rewarded with the privilege of participating in a variety of lab experiments.

  1. Additional Help

If you are struggling with a concept, extra help is available during our Advisory and Intervention periods.

  1. Computer Usage

When using the classroom computers, students will be required to sign on using their user name and password. This user name and password should never be shared with other students. Students should follow all guidelines on the Mayfield City Schools Computer Usage Agreement.

  1. Computer Hours

Some science assignments require a computer and Internet access. If students are unable to complete Internet/computer activities at home or at a public library, MayfieldMiddle School is well equipped with several computer labs.

  1. Homework

Homework/Practice is sometimes given Monday through Thursday, although students that manage their class time well may be able to complete assignments in school.Science homework is given to deepen your child’s understanding of the learning target. Homework is posted daily in the classroom and can be viewed on the teacher’s webpage.
