Dear Siuslaw Families:
On behalf of the entire SES staff, I’d like to welcome you to the 2017-2018 school year.
We were fortunate to meet a number of new families at registration and the Back-to-School BBQ. One of the best things about our school community is how quickly new students are welcomed into our classrooms.
Any new school year brings a number of changes. I’d like to highlight a few of these changes here.
New Staff: Mrs. Jones (Kindergarten), Mrs. Stemberg (4th Grade), Mrs. Riggs (5th Grade) and Mrs. Moore (Title 1). We also have a number of teachers in new roles and several new assistants.
New Policy on Snacks and Treats: Recognizing student birthdays has been a long-standing tradition at SES.However, changes in the School Nutrition Program require us to limit the offering of high-sugar snacks. We will no longer be able to allow snacks such as cupcakes and cookies for student recognition. You may still make arrangements with classroom teachers to bring in healthy snacks like fruits and vegetable.
Focus on Manners: The staff at SES has long noticed a coarsening of student-to-student and student-to-staff communication. In order to emphasize manners and polite behavior, classroom teachers will be using the book Dude, That’s Rude!: Get Some Manners with students this year. We will also be holding students to a higher, more formal, standard of conduct in their interactions. If families would like a copy of the book, we will make it available for purchase in the main office.
It’s going to be a busy start to the year. Please mark your calendars with a couple of events
Back-to-School Nights for each grade level will be held according to the schedule below. All evenings are from 6:00-7:00. This is a great time to meet with teachers about expectations and routines.
Kindergarten- October 10 1st Grade- September 7
2nd Grade- September 12 3rd Grade- September 12
4th Grade- September 6 5th Grade- September 6
