Sit to stand test

The purpose of the sit to stand test it to measure leg strength and endurance.

Equipment required

A chair with a straight back without arm rests and a stopwatch. Put the chair against a wall.

Test procedure

Instruct the subject to sit in the middle of the chair, and place their hands on the opposite shoulder crossed at the wrists.

Keep their feet flat on the floor and back straight. Arms held against the chest. When told to stand by the instructor (“go”), the subject must rise to a full standing position and sit back down again. This is repeated for 30 seconds.

1. Sit in the middle of the chair

2. Place your hands on the opposite should crossed at the wrists.

3. The instructor must start timing by telling the subject to stand (“go”)

Recording the data

If the subject needs to use his/her arms to stand, stop the test. Record ‘0’ for the number and score. Count the number of times the subject comes to a full standing position in 30 seconds. If the subject is over halfway to a standing position when 30 seconds have elapsed, count it as a stand. Record the number of times the subject stands in 30 seconds.

Data should be recorded in the table above.

**REMEMBER to re-test in 6 weeks and 20 weeks from the first measurements. Tip: put it in the diary.
