Our mission

“To improve the quality of life for the residents in and visitors to Silkstone and Silkstone Common.”

What do Silkstone Parish Council do ?...

Silkstone Parish Council is the first tier of local government representing the villages of Silkstone and Silkstone Common. The Parish Council has nine elected members and a part time Parish Clerk & Responsible Finance Officer.

The Council has Quality Parish Status which is a quality mark that shows that the business of the Parish Council is managed correctly.

The Parish Council administer the Twinning Committee and Silkstone Playing Fields Management Committee.

The total precept (Parish element of the Council tax) for the Parish for 2012/2013 was £62,500.

The Parish Council have a number of assets in the Parish which they manage including:

  • Silkstone Sports Pavilion and Recreation Ground including a Multi Use Games area and car park.
  • Allotment site
  • Woodland areas and open spaces at Conroyd Wood, Cone Lane, Silkstone, Orchard Wood and Meadow, Silkstone Common and The Chestnuts in Silkstone.
  • War Memorial and congregation area
  • The landscaped area at The Roses, Silkstone Common
  • 18 benches and a number of small areas of landplanters adjacent to the highway.

The Parish Council also support local organisations such as: Old Silkstone Brass Band, Silkstone Luncheon Club and Silkstone Common WI. Applications for grants are accepted at anytime of the year.
A newsletter is distributed four times per year to every home in Silkstone and Silkstone Common.

The Parish Council are working in partnership with the management committee for the proposed new Community Centre in Silkstone at the back of the Petrol Station, which subject to approval of planning permission should be built later this year and replaces the old scout hut.

An overview by the ChairmanCllr Richard Leech

Thank you - Councillors
Firstly, I would like to thank all the councillors who have given their time and effort for the benefit of the Parish this last twelve months.

Richard Brocklehurst
Jonathon Charlesworth
Pat Gallamore
Pete Handley
Derek Liddell
Meryl Liddell
Pat Smith
Ron Stier

I would also like to give special thanks to our Clerk, Karen Canadine who has had a very busy year with all the new Council projects.

Ward Councillors

I would also like to thank our Ward Councillors for the support they have given us when dealing with BMBC.

Robert Barnard
Paul Hand-Davis
John Wilson

Supporters

Thanks are also due to Diane Brown, Linda Marsh, Tony and June Fieldsend who give their time freely in support of the Parish Council.

Groups

Both Silkstone in Bloom and CARE have again been instrumental in keeping the Parish neat and tidy this year. CARE has now created a Community Equipment resource where tools and gardening equipment are available for use on Parish projects.

Meetings

Councillor attendance at Parish meetings has been 74% this year, very good for a Parish Council of our size. Thank you for your time and effort.

Parish Council

The Parish Council has raised the precept this year by 4%. This equates to about £2.16per chargeable household per year. The extra money will go towards the hanging baskets and the continuing developments in the War Memorial area and also towards increasing the service the Parish Council supplies throughout the Parish.

The Parish Newsletter continues to go from strength to strength, last year’s colour edition for the Jubilee being particularly well received. All the newsletters are available in colour on the new Parish website which has been upgraded over the last few months

The Pavillion at Silkstone Recreation Ground has been suffering from water ingress over the last few years but after a long process our insurers have sanctioned works to commence which will hopefully stop this. The boiler at the Pavillion also needs replacing, after 12 years of service I suppose this can be expected.

Parish Projects

The Parish Council continues its development of the War Memorial site. Money from the precept will be used to continue improvements in this important area. Hopefully a grant can be obtained to resurface the entire area. Also on Martin Croft the Parish Council hope to replace the roundabout which was broken.

The development of a new community centre on the site of the Scout Hut has now been taken over by the Parish Council. Many thanks must go out to the Scout Hut committee who have worked hard to raise funds for the project. Without this group the initial concept would never have got off the ground and representatives of the group are working with the Parish Council to push this project forward. Maybe next year’s meeting will be held there.

Parish

A warm welcome should be extended to the new vicar of All Saints Church, Silkstone, Rev. Maureen Browell. The Parish Council support the Church where they can by sharing the cost of the servicing to the Church clock and providing grants for one off items such as towards the replacement Christmas Lights and in considering grants to Church groups like the Uz group.

Our parish continues to have a low level of crime compared to other parts of the Borough. However, because of a reduction in Police resources, we should be more vigilant than ever, why not consider joining or forming a Neighbourhood Watch Group. Use the new 101 phone number for reporting non urgent crime.

Dog fouling continues to be an issue within the Parish. A minority of dog owners continue to allow their dogs to mess and not clear up. This is both inconsiderate and dangerous when allowed on the playing areas of both our recreation grounds.

Coming Year

This July we will have a visit from our friends in St Florent de Bois. I understand there will be 12 youth members visiting to experience our culture, let’s hope the weather is favourable. The Parish Council will be meeting with the Twining Committee from St Florent to continue to develop our relationship.

Also, in July, Rock in the Rec will once again go ahead. After consultation with the Parish Council the finishing time has been brought forward. This is a great event for the Parish and should be supported.

Conclusion

Your Parish Council continues to strive to make our parish a desirable place to live. Please help all our community groups where you can. Cllr Richard Leech
