Sienkiewicz Level Leapers
Description
This is a leveled point system that addresses daily privileges earned as well as on-going levels of development that students advance through based on long term behavioral performances. This point and level system is used: (a) as the basic structure for daily behavior management: (b) as a daily communication system with parents regarding behavioral performance and (c) as a data collection system to make decisions regarding intervention effectiveness.
Daily Pointcard
Each student has a daily pointcard with five target behaviors. Three of the skills are classroom rules and are the same for everyone in the class. (e.g. follow directions immediately, raise my hand, and stay on task). Two of the skills are individual skills taken from each student’s individual education plan (e.g. keep hands and feet to self). The class discusses the reasons the behavioral skills are important for behavioral and academic success. The class also discusses the consequences or effects of demonstrating or not demonstrating these skills and how that can affect relationships with peers in school or life. Each skill is directly taught and examples and non-examples are practiced before the pointcard is used and reviewed regularly as needed. Visual reminders of the skills and possible consequences are also provided. At the end of each class period, the student either earns or does not earn the point for that particular skill based on their behavioral performance.
The daily points are assessed two times during the day; (1) just before lunch and the students’ markers will be moved as appropriate based on the points they have earned, as well as privileges and lunch seat assignments will be given and (2) at the end of the day, with students markers being moved based on their points earned as well as privileges being awarded.
Students have the flexibility of moving up or down throughout the day as well as staying level on this system. Any student who displays any aggression (e.g. shouting “wanna go”, or attempting to trip another student) will immediately be moved to TadPole Pool and further restrictions may take place based on the level of aggression. More serious levels of aggression (making physical connect with another student-kicking, hitting, shoving/pushing, etc) will cause student to be moved to Fish Bait Bucket.
Recovery Points
Recovery points are given for turning behavior around and recovering after having made an inappropriate behavioral choice. These recovery points offer an incentive for students to get back on track and not let a small mistake start a downhill spiral. A student can earn one Recovery Point each time they have demonstrated an ability to stop the behavior or poor choice and get back on track. For example, if a student is refusing to work and has lost 2 points for various behaviors displayed, they can earn one point back (it would cancel out one of the lost points) for “turning it around” and getting back on track.
Chips
Chips are awarded to a student who has earned 80% or more of their daily points. The Chips are used by the students to purchase special reward passes such as teacher’s chair, homework pass, computer time, etc. when they are on Lily Pad Leap or Frog Pond levels.
Bonus Chips
Bonus Chips are awarded for exceptional behavior choices. This may be for working well with a peer or partner that they have displayed difficulties with, being honest when self-evaluating behavioral choices, or successfully demonstrating a social skill that the class is focusing on, etc. Bonus Chips can be used by the student to purchase special reward passes when they are on Lily Pad Leap or Frog Pond levels.
Levels
Privilege Levels
Tadpole Pool: student earns less than 80% of their daily points. This is a restricted, supervised level. Desk alone in front row, Supervised lunch-sitting alone, No Fun Friday-work completion at desk, No social time with classmates.
Lily Pad Leap: student earns 80% of their daily points (32 points). This is a trust level where students earn basic classroom jobs and responsibilities. All students will start here each morning. Desk with group, Lunch at assigned seats with friends, Fun Friday-at desk or table-playing cards or board game, Social time with classmates, Class job assigned, buy a homework or teacher chair pass, Instrument Lesson, Band or Chorus, I-Pad Use, Chip Earned.
Frog Pond: Student earns 90% of their daily points (36 points). This is the reward level. Student gets all Lily Pad Leap privileges with the addition of some highly desirable privileges. All Lily Pad Leap privileges, Lunch with other level 3(Frog pond) students or mainstream friends, Fun Friday-Choice of activity, Social Time during lessons and free time, Buy any Pass for additional reward (computer time, homework pass, icecream, etc.), Reward Roll-see above list, Club Participation, Field Trip, Chip Earned.
Fish Bait Bucket: students placed here have displayed serious inappropriate or unsafe behaviors. The student loses all privileges and further restrictions.
Movement within Privilege Levels
Students start on Lily Pad Leap each morning. They will stay here until the mid-day assessment unless they have lost 7 or more chips they will be moved earlier. If a student has earned 20 or less points (<80% of available points) at the mid-day assessment, they will then be moved to Tadpole pool. If a student has earned 21-23 points (80% of available points) the student will remain on Lily Pad Leap. If a student has earned 24 or more (90% or more) of the available points they will move up to Frog Pond. Similar movement will take place at the end of the school day also.
Long Term Levels: student pictures will be placed on a colored background based on their long-term level. This picture will be what is placed on a visual board of the Privilege levels displayed in the front of the classroom.
Green Level- standard level. This means they are in self-contained classroom for the majority of academics, where they can receive extensive instruction on behavioral skills in addition to academics. They will attend social studies/science, physical education, lunch and recess with their general education peers with support from an aid.
Purple Level- inclusionary level. After a student earns at least 90% of their daily points for 20 consecutive school days, an inclusion experiences is added in the general education setting. This will be individually determined based on student strengths and ability to maintain Frog Pond Level. This inclusion will stay in place as long as the child continues to earn 90% of points. (The student who is at purple level will be allowed to have no more than 3 consecutive days of earning less than 90% of their points before a return to green level).
Brown Level- restrictive level. Students that exhibit serious inappropriate or unsafe behaviors (threats, kicking, pushing) are placed in the Fish Bait Bucket. This is based on the concept that trust has been lost which is discussed in advance and reviewed often in an effort to keep students out of Fish Bait Bucket. While a student is placed in Fish Bait Bucket, an adult must make all the choices for everyone’s safety. The student is only at school to learn and complete assignments. All extra privileges are temporarily lost until the student can demonstrate he or she can be trusted. The student will sit in a defined area of the classroom or school (dependent on the level of aggression, Code of Conduct and Principal’s discretion) and will remain there for the day unless escorted by an adult (e.g. bathroom, drink, etc.) Alternate activities for specials occur alone in the classroom with an adult. The student can only interact with the teacher, aide or adult in the room and the adult makes all the choices for the student (e.g. what materials to use, order of assignments). The student does not attend any special activities for that day such as assemblies, field trip or class parties. The student remains on this level until they earn 80% of the daily points, at which time they return to their desk and Lily Pad Leap.
