Lifting Procedures

1. Plan the move before lifting; remove obstructions from your chosen pathway.

2. Test the weight of the load before lifting by pushing the load along its resting surface.

3. If the load is too heavy or bulky, use carrying aids such as hand trucks or carts, or get assistance from a coworker.

4. If assistance is required to perform a lift, coordinate and communicate your movements with those of your coworker.

5. Position your feet 6 to 12 inches apart with one foot slightly in front of the other.

6. Face the load.

7. Bend at the knees, not at the back.

8. Keep your back straight.

9. Get a firm grip on the object with your hands and fingers. Use handles when present.

10. Never lift anything if your hands are greasy or wet.

11. Wear protective gloves when lifting objects with sharp corners or jagged edges.

12. Hold objects as close to your body as possible.

13. Perform lifting movements smoothly and gradually; do not jerk the load.

14. If you must change direction while lifting or carrying the load, pivot your feet and turn your entire body. Do not twist at the waist.

15. Set down objects in the same manner as you picked them up, except in reverse.

16. Do not lift an object from the floor to a level above your waist in one motion. Set the load down on a table or bench and then adjust your grip before lifting it higher.

Ladders and Step Ladders

1. Do not exceed the ladder's load rated capacity labeled on the ladder.

2. Do not use a ladder that wobbles or leans.

3. Do not use a ladder that has loose rungs, cracked or split side rails, missing rubber foot pads or other visible damage.

4. Keep ladder rungs clean and free of grease. Remove buildup of material such as dirt or mud.

5. Do not use a metal ladder on rooftops or within 50 feet of electrical power lines.

6. Do not place ladders in a passageway or doorway without posting warning signs or cones that detour pedestrian traffic away from the ladder. Lock the doorway that you are blocking and post the sign "Detour".

7. Face the ladder when climbing up or down.

8. Maintain a three-point contact by keeping both hands and one foot or both feet and one hand on the ladder at all times when climbing up or down.

9. Do not stand on the top two rungs of any ladder.

10. When using an extension ladder, extend the top of the ladder at least 3 feet above the edge of the landing.

11. Do not move a rolling ladder while someone is on it.

12. Do not place ladders on barrels, boxes, loose bricks, pails, concrete blocks or other unstable bases.

13. Do not carry items in your hands while climbing up or down a ladder.

14. Do not try to "walk" a ladder by rocking it. Climb down the ladder, and then move it.

15. Do not use a ladder as a horizontal platform when working at a height exceeding 10 feet.

16. In locations where the surface on which the ladder rests might be slippery, tie down the base of the ladder with a rope. If this cannot be done, have another person hold the base of the ladder; then, if possible, tie down the top of the ladder.

17. Do not place a ladder against a window or sash; fasten a board (do not nail it on) across the rails so that the board rests on both sides of the window frame.

18. Do not tie or fasten together two ladders to make one longer ladder unless one ladder is equipped with an attachment that allows the connection to another ladder.

GRAPHICS DESIGNERS/VINYL LETTERING FABRICATORS

General Rules

1. Do not use a razor blade that is not in a retractable holder for cutting vinyl lettering. Retract the razor blade in its holder after use.

2. When handling exacto knives, razor blades and other cutting tools, direct the sharp points and edges away from you.

3. Do not carry exacto knives, razor blades or other cutting tools in your pockets.

4. Do not attempt to catch a falling tool.

Video Display Terminal Ergonomics

1. Stand up and stretch once every hour.

2. Adjust the height of your chair so that when you are sitting, your elbow and keyboard heights are the same.

3. If the chair height is too high, use a book or other object as a footrest.

4. Move your computer screen and keyboard so that they are directly in front of you.

5. For additional lower back support, place a pillow or bundled clothing in the chair at the small of your back.

PRODUCTION DEPARTMENT PERSONNEL - Sheet Metal Operations, Wood Working Operations, Plastic Operations, Electrical and Neon Operations, Welding Operations

9. Do not remove, cover or alter warning tags on any part of any machine.

10. Do not remove locks affixed by another employee.

Power Saws

1. Wear safety goggles, a dust mask and hearing protection when operating a power saw.

2. Clean any residue from the blade or cutting head before making a new cut with the power saw.

3. Do not make measurements to the stock while the power saw is running. Make the measurements before turning the power switch to the "On" position.

4. Operate the saw at full cutting speed and with a sharp blade to prevent kickbacks.

5. Do not reach across the cutting operation.

Table Saws

1. Do not use a table saw blade or cutting head that is missing teeth or is cracked.

2. Keep your hand out of the line of the cut when feeding the work piece through the table saw.

3. Do not feed the material faster than the table saw can cut it.

4. Use the push stick to guide short stock through the table saw or when there is not enough room for hand movement between the rip fence and the table saw blade.

5. Turn the power switch of the table saw to "Off" and allow the blade to stop before attempting to pull out an incomplete cut.

Radial Arm Saws

1. Use a clamp to secure the stock to the table before cutting the stock with a radial arm saw.

2. When cutting, pull the radial arm saw to the point necessary to complete the cut, release it, and then let it return to its stored position before removing the stock from the table.

Band Saws

1. Do not use your hands to clear scraps around the cutting blade of the band saw; use the pusher stick.

2. Do not feed the material faster than the band saw can cut it.

3. If the material binds or pinches on the blade, turn the power switch of the band saw to "Off" and allow the blade to stop before attempting to back the work away from the blade.

4. If the saw blade breaks, follow this procedure:

• Shut off the power.

• Lock the start switch in the "Off" position.

• Do not attempt to remove any part of the saw blade until the machine has completely stopped.
