SMART Board: Tutorial
Educational Tool for Internet presentation, daily classroom routine & Power Point
Orienting the board
Start Menu button> Select Programs> SMART Board software> SMART Board
Menu Options include:
Notebook…opens up the Notebook program
Keyboard…opens up the keyboard function
Floating Tools…displays a window with simple SMART board tools
Pen, Highlighter, Eraser, Mouse right-click, Filled rectangle, Pointer,
Clear, Cursor, Screen capture, Area capture, and Print
Control Panel…changes the SMART Board settings
Orient…orients the board to the interactive touch
Recorder…allows the recording function to be used
Select Orient Board:
Quick (9 points)
The Board will not be very accurate, but it works for quick uses
Standard (20 points)
Better accuracy. Most programs work well with this setting.
Fine (80 points)
Best accuracy. Good option for a detailed program.
Select Standard 20 point orientation
Touch the Red Cross points for each location on the board
The screen will then revert to the standard desktop
Using SmartBoard:
SMART Board acts as your desktop monitor
Demonstrate Internet sites by lightly touching the SMART Board with your fingers
You can use the standard mouse and keyboard.
SMART Board buttons:
Top button on the SMART Board is the on-screen keyboard button
Click on letters to type. Will appear in coordination with the cursor.
Click on the Write icon (top middle of keyboard)
Use handwritten script with the pens
Handwritten script recognition will appear as text at the bottom Click on the Commit button (bottom of toolbar)
To insert text at desired location.
Bottom button of the SMART Board is the mouse button
Acts as a right click on the mouse (menus)
SMART Notebook
Start Menu button> Select Programs> SMART Board software> SMART Notebook
Menu appears at the far left:
Save, Print and Undo work similar to word processing program
Next and Back buttons cycle through pages as slides in Power Point
+Blank button creates a new page in the notebook
Select button changes cursor from a drawing tool to a normal cursor
Pen changes the cursor into the pen drawing tool
Delete removes any selected object
Select Pen and write script on the SMART Board
You can write on the board with the pens supplied in the pen tray.
Picking up a pen from the tray activates the color and writing action.
Once you pick up a pen, you could use your finger as a marker
You can also use your hand as an eraser, if the round eraser pad is out of the tray.
Be certain to return all pens to the tray after use.
Convert written script to text
Select the Select button on the floating toolbar to your left
Click on the writing you wish to convert to text
Select the small A button that appears in the right corner of the selected text
To convert more than several words:
Select the Select button on the floating toolbar to your left
Click and hold the left mouse button
A box will appear as you move your mouse
Drag the box over all objects, which you wish to convert to text
Click on the A button in the right corner of the selected text
Script changes to text.
Be aware that sloppy script will be difficult to transcribe.
Save work to the Desktop (SMART Note icon will appear)
To view saved SMART Notebooks:
Click the SmartNotebook icon on the desktop: File-Open-Select File
Select the Side Sorter, to view small slides down the side of the screen
Select the Full Screen icon in the lower right portion of the screen
Navigate with the floating window

Power Point Presentation using SMART Board
Open SMART Notebook
Open Power Point presentation on the desktop
Tools menu at top of board
Print This Slide with PowerPoint- Prints current slide with any changes
PowerPoint Menu-
The arrow buttons can navigate slides on the SMART Board
Clicking on the center button brings up a Board/ PowerPoint menu
Save Annotations to Power Point
Pick up a pen in the tray to annotate any of the slides
Clear Annotations- All markings from the slides will be erased
TOOLS menu in SMART Notebook:
File-Edit-View-Insert
Format
Tools: SMART Notebook Commands- Power Point commands
Draw: Drawing shapes-Highlighter (broad & translucent)- Order
SMART Recorder
Select SMART Recorder from the starting menu
Allows you to create movies- select type of movie file to “Save As’
Small recorder window opens- Record*Pause*Stop
Record button records everything
Pause pauses the process: select record or pause again to resume
Stop button- stops recording action
Prompts ask where to save the movie file
Setting up the SmartBoard to your computer & projector
- Shut down your computer
- Disconnect the serial monitor cable on the back of the computer
The cord connecting the video monitor to the computer
- Connect the projector cable from the projector (first Projector Data Port)
Into the monitor port on the computer
- Attach the serial cable to the serial port on the bottom right of the Smart Board
- Attach the serial cable to a COM port on the back of the computer
- Attach the keyboard to the keyboard adapter
- Install the keyboard adapter cable to the keyboard port on computer.
- Turn the computer and projector on.
