Distillery Wastewater Management:

Achieving the Goal of Zero Discharge

October 29 – November 2, 2007

INTRODUCTION

Distillery waste is well known for its tremendous pollution potential due to its very high organic and inorganic loading, low pH and dark colour. The population equivalent of distillery waste based on BOD has been reported to be as high as 6.2 billion which means that the contribution of distillery waste in India to organic pollution is approximately 7 times more than the contribution by the entire population.

Distillery has been classified as one of the highest polluting industries by CPCB. Almost all distilleries reduce the organic loads by using appropriate form of anaerobic digestion at the first step. For further treatment, no satisfactory and cost effective method is available as of now. As a result, most of the distilleries in India are unable to meetthe effluent standards prescribed by MoEF.In 2003, CPCB constituted a task force on Corporate Responsibility for Environmental Protection (CREP). Under this task force, a road map was developed to achieve zero discharge of spent wash into inland surface by December 2005, which is yet to be achieved.

This training programme envisages identifying the recent techniques for treating distillery waste, which could be attractive as well as cost effective.

FACULTY

Most of the experts shall be from IIT Bombay. Few experts from other premier institutes, industry and field could be invited for delivering super-specialized lectures in various sessions, provided the response for the course is excellent. Each session would be followed by interactive sessions on the subject matter. A number of real case studiesonIndian distilleries are being included to give participants the assessment and the feeling of the actual scenario.
