Short History of Jerusalem- It’s easy to repeat history if we don’t know its patterns.

  1. INTRODUCTION:
  • Genesis 15:18-21, God promises land to Abram from the river of Egypt to the Euphrates.
  1. ~1,000 BC
  • 2 Samuel 5:6-9, I Chronicles 11:4-9 – David takes Jebus and makes it the capital city of Israel, changing its name to Jerusalem.
  1. ~925 BC
  • 2 Chronicles 12:1-12, I Kings 14:21-27 – Shishak, king of Egypt, takes the city from Rehoboam and plunders the Temple. “He took everything.”
  1. ~850 BC
  • 2 Chronicles 21:12-20 –The Philistines, Arabians (and Ethiopians?) sack Jerusalem during king Jehoram’s reign and plunder the king’s treasures and family.
  1. ~792 BC
  • 2 Kings 14:12-14 - Jehoash, king of Israel, captured Amaziah, king of Judah, tore down 650 ft of Jerusalem’s wall and took the gold and silver and all the articles found in the House of the Lord, the king’s treasures and hostages.
  1. ~701 BC
  • 2 Chronicles 32:1-23, (2 Kings 18:1-19:37) – Sennacherib, king of Assyria, lay siege to Jerusalem during Hezekiah’s reign and declares that he will destroy it, but the Angel of the Lord destroys 185,000 of his troops and he returns home in shame.
  1. ~605 BC
  • Daniel 1:1, 2 Kings 24:1 = Nebuchadnezzar (in his 7th year) attacks Jerusalem the first time. 3,023 Jews taken away captive.
  1. ~597 BC
  • 2 Chronicles 36:9-10, 2 Kings 24:10-17 – Nebuchadnezzar (in his 18th year) attacks Jerusalem the second time. 832 captives taken away.
  1. ~586 BC
  • 2 Kings 24:18-25:21, 2 Chronicles 36:15-21 – Nebuchadnezzar (in his 23rd year) attacks Jerusalem the third time. 745 Jews taken away captive.
