NEWS RELEASE
On October 8, 2015 at 0815hrs, Cowley County Dispatch gave Udall 202 a call of a reckless driver southbound on K-15 from the Sumner/Cowley Line. The vehicle was described as a Red Pontiac possibly a Gran Am. A short time later the caller stated the car had just peeled out of the One-Stop in Udall and was Eastbound on K-15 at a high rate of speed.
A sheriff’s deputy observed a red colored car, later determined to be 1993 Pontiac Grand Prix registered to the suspect, just north of 102nd Road on US 77 Highway and radar showed it at 84 mph. The sheriff’s deputy turned around and activated his patrol lights and the vehicle passed a vehicle in a no passing zone heading up the hill just north of 112th Road. The deputy was able to catch up to the vehicle and just south of 122nd Road and he had passed several more vehicles in no passing zones and was left of center, with a vehicle coming more than once. We continued southbound on U.S. 77 until 142nd Road. The vehicle slammed on its brakes and slid passed the intersection into the south ditch. The vehicle then proceeded to make a U-Turn and headed west on 142nd Road. The vehicle continued west past 75th Road and across the railroad tracks. The deputy proceeded west and could not see the vehicle.
A few seconds later the vehicle came out of the field and back on to the driveway southbound towards the deputy’s location. The vehicle then proceeded east on 142nd Road and went southbound at the railroad tracks on the west side road. The vehicle then attempted to get on the east side and became hung up on the railroad tracks. The suspect then fled on foot southbound. The suspect approached deputies and Winfield Police Officers who were south of him, initially making obscene gestures, putting his hands in his pockets and refusing to comply with orders to get down on the ground. Eventually he did comply and was taken into custody without further incident. The vehicle was removed from the railroad tracks by a wrecker service.
The driver and only occupant of the vehicle, Anthony L. Taylor, M, B, 29, Wichita was taken to the William Newton Memorial Hospital to be checked out due to his erratic and irrational behavior.
Upon his release, after being medically cleared, he will be transported to and booked into the Cowley County Jail on the following charges, driving under the influence, fleeing or attempting to elude law enforcement officers and driving in violation of driver’s license restrictions, as well as numerous traffic violations.
The Winfield Police Department and Kansas Highway patrol assisted in the arrest of this suspect. The 911 Center Dispatchers did an excellent job communication information to all of the agencies involved.
