Compensation: Minimum Wage = entry level position

Visalia Rescue Mission Shelter - Shelter Staff

Three Main Shifts:

1. 7:30am to 4:00pm Morning Shift

2. 3:30pm to Midnight Evening Shift

3. 11:30pm to 7:30am Grave Yard Shift

Other shifts are basically around these basic time frames.

Position Summary: The Homeless Shelter Staff provides support and assistance in carrying out day to day operations of the emergency homeless shelter by performing the following duties:

Reports To: Shelter Director

Essential Functions:

1. Implements structure of Homeless Shelter and services for day to day operations as directed by Shelter Directorassuring safety as the number one criteria.

2. Prepares incident reports, client file documents, data collection as necessary and maintains records of program related activities.

3. Screens new clients on intake.

4. Interacts with adult clients and their families.

5. Monitor safety for service of meals for clients.

6. Assists with the maintenance of the Shelter in a clean, sanitary and safe condition.

7. Documents and maintains proper reporting of incidents and relays them to Shelter Director.

8. Remains alert to outbreaks of infectious diseases and report’s same as directed.

9. Assists in donations as they are delivered.

10. Answers incoming Shelter phone calls after regular office hours.

11. Places all potential weapons and medications in appropriate locked cabinets.

12. Stays alert to all client activity during the shift hours as assigned.

13. Fulfills other essential responsibilities and duties as may be assigned and/or required.

14. Oversees client medications in accordance with agency and certification standards.

15. Attends meetings as directed in representation of the agency.

16. Carries out responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Random drug testing, background check (negative findings do not necessarily mean you will not be a successful candidate for the job)

Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Oral Communications: Must have the ability to speak clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations. Listens well and obtains clarification with others to enable accurate communications with clients and staff.

Problem Solving: Must be able to identify and resolve problems in an effective and timely manner. Has the ability to focus on solving conflict not blaming; keeps emotions under control at all times.

Customer Service: Manages difficult or emotional client situations.

Diversity: Shows respect and sensitivity for cultural and individual differences.

Ethics: Treats all people, clients and staff fairly, equally and with respect.

Judgment: Has ability to show sound judgment in decision making process and includes the appropriate individuals throughout the process.

Safety and Security: Follows agency protocol and policy and procedures at all times; reports potentially unsafe conditions.

Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the shelter assistant is frequently required to lift and or move up to 90 pounds.

Education/Experience: High School Diploma or general education degree (GED); and/or 1 to 3 months related experience and/or training.

Valid Driver's License: not necessary.

Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, client logs and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively to groups of clients and employees of the organization.

Computer Skills: Ability to learn basic computer skills to write reports as well as use agency’s time clock procedure.
