IMPORTANT INFORMATION

First of all, congratulations on choosing to join one of our outstanding athletic/activities programs! Whether it is on a paid or volunteer basis, coaching can be a rewarding and enriching experience. With the title “coach” comes great responsibility. Other than a caring parent/guardian and possible youth pastor, a coach in a young person’s life has tremendous influence

There are also other important requirements for all paid and volunteer coaches before they can work with student-athletes at Sheldon High School and district 4j. Please complete all of the following items that apply as soon as possible. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the head coach or athletic director. Failure to complete the below expectations in a timely fashion may prohibit your involvement within the program.

To do list prior to coaching:

1)Paid coach only: Fill out application online at the job is officially posted. The AD will set-up a time for an interview. HR will then call you to set up time to fill out paperwork. Complete necessary paperwork from Brandon Crohare (HR).

  2. the online site for all volunteer coaches at Sheldon. Please visit and fill out all the necessary requirements before working with the student-athletes. Please note: The site option will be SHS Athletics.

4j School District Coaching Requirements:

NOTE: is a great site for Sheldon coaches who need general HR information and annual mandatory 4j training information.

  1. Annual Safety Training for ALL Coaches:
  1. As a 4j district Coach, you must register to complete your mandatory trainings.
  1. Concussion Awareness: (Max’s Law- Oregon)
  2. Heat Illness Prevention
  3. Steriod & PED Awareness in Athletics
  4. Sexual Conduct: Staff-to-Student
  5. Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Prevention
  6. Child Abuse: Mandatory Reporting
  7. First Aid
  8. AED

Go to our SafeSchools homepage, , click “Register” (To the right of the “Sign in” button). On the next screen you will be prompted to enter the registration key from above. Next you will be prompted to enter some basic information, including a username of your choice, which you will use to login to the system moving forward.

B.Coaches (includes all sports sanctioned by OSAA, plus Cheerleading and Dance/Drill)

1)NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching – OSAA requires that coaches must achieve a passing score on the test included with this course (). This is a one-time requirement.

2)Concussion Recognition and Management Training – Oregon State Law (ORS 336.485) requires that coaches receive training to learn how to recognize the symptoms of a concussion and how to seek proper medical treatment for a person suspected of having a concussion. The NFHS’s Concussion in Sports free course () satisfies this requirement. This training is required annually.

3)NFHS Heat Acclimatization and Heat Illness Prevention – OSAA requires that coaches must achieve a passing score on the test included with the NFHS’s A Guide to Heat Acclimatization and Heat Illness Prevention free course (). This is an every other year requirement.

4)Anabolic Steroids and Performance-Enhancing Substances Training – Oregon State Law (ORS 342.726) requires that coaches receive training on identifying the components of anabolic steroid abuse and use and prevention strategies for the use of performance-enhancing substances. The Oregon Department of Education (ODE) hosts the training and assessment on their website at . This training is required once every four years.
