Sheep Meat Value Chain Training Program

A funded training program for new leaders in the agrifood business.

Program overview

TheSheepMeatValueChainProgramisafundedcustomtrainingprogramforindividualswhowishtopursueacareerinagrifood.Specifically,thefive-dayresidentialprograminregionalWesternAustralia(WA)willfocusonthesheepmeatvaluechainindustry.ItwillbedeliveredbyProfessorKimBrycesonfromTheUniversityofQueensland(UQ)SchoolofAgricultureandFoodSciencesandwillalso feature guest speakers from the agrifood industry.

Youwillhavetheopportunitytonetworkandshareideaswithindustrypeersandexperts.Youwillfurtherdevelopsupplychainthinking,andknowledgeofchallengesandopportunitiesthatareunique to the sheep meat industry.

Whileitdoesnotcontributetowardacademicaward,uponcompletion,theprogramculminatesinagraduationceremony.AttendeeswillreceiveaCertificateofParticipation.Whererequested,participantsmaywishtohavethecourseacknowledgedasa contributiontowardsundergraduateworkexperiencerequirements.

ThisisaninitiativeoftheDepartmentofPrimaryIndustriesand RegionalDevelopment(DPIRD)inpartnershipwithUQBusiness School Executive Education.

Therewillbeahighlycompetitiveselectionprocessandsuccessfulcandidates will undertake pre-readings and assessment.

Who should apply

Individualsfromvariousdisciplines,undergraduates,recentgraduates and postgraduates are welcome to apply.

Yourstudiesdonothavetobespecifictoagribusinessoragrifood,however,ademonstratedinteresttoworkinthesheepmeatindustry is desired.

Cost

The course is funded by DPIRD’s Sheep Industry Business Innovation (SIBI) project - including travel,accommodation and catering costs.

About the facilitator - Professor Kim Bryceson

KimisaProfessorofAgribusinessattheUQSchoolofAgricultureandFoodSciences.Herearlyresearchinvolveddevelopingandimplementingcomputerandsatellitetechnologyforintegratedpestmanagement,droughtmonitoring,sitespecificmanagement,andagribusiness decisionsupportsystemdevelopmentwiththeCommonwealthandQueensland State governments.

Overthelast15yearsinacademia,shehasbeeninvolvedinagrifoodsupplyandvaluechainanalysis domesticallyand internationally, withparticularfocusonusingvariousmodellingtoolstoconstructsupplychainrisk assessment and performance management scenarios.

KimisalsotheDirectoroftheAgriculturalRemoteSensingLaboratoryatUQ’sGattoncampus.Underherleadership,thecollectionofrealtimestreamingBigDatathroughanInternetofThingsinfrastructureisdeveloping.Thedesign,buildinganduseofsmalldronetechnologyandroboticsforagriculturalandenvironmentalmonitoringand sub-tropical agricultural research and teaching, is also flourishing.

About DPIRD and SIBI

The initiative is part of DPIRD’s Sheep Industry Business Innovation (SIBI) project, which aims to support the sheep industry to capitalise on growing markets for sheep products.

SIBIassiststhe industrytobuildcapacity tosupplynew marketsfor sheep meatand liveexports,particularlyin nearby Asia and the Middle East, generating flow on benefits to producers,industry, the regions, communitiesand the state economy.

The projectrecognises the value in providingcurrent industry learning experiences to undergraduates. Theintention is to expose and excite students to choose a career in the agrifood supply chain, and in so doingbecome value chain specialists. The students will form a cohort of potential candidates for the SIBI / Meat and Livestock Australia placement program.
