Sharing With Others

K-2nd

Purpose: The purpose of this lesson is to engage students in a problem-solving task when there is a scarcity of materials.

Duration: 30-60 minutes

Objectives: The learner will:

-engage in an activity that requires sharing to solve a problem.

-brainstorm a variety of solutions to the problem.

-discover that they must share limited resources to solve the attack.

Materials:

-cardboard letters (equal to half the kids in the class)

-crayons or pencils

-paper

Instructional Procedures: Explain that there is a problem and that help is needed from the class to solve it.

EXPLAIN THE PROBLEM- Each child is to trace and color a cardboard letter on white paper.

-Invite class to brainstorm ideas to solve the problem.

-Write all reasonable ideas on whiteboard.

-Discuss which ideas will work or not work and why, cross out those that will not.

-Let students decide which idea they would like to try.

-Complete the task.

Sharing With Others

Grades K-5

Purpose: Students will identify why sharing is positive, and demonstrate the understanding of sharing.

Duration: 35 minutes

Materials needed:

-Little T Learns to Share by Terrell Owens

- Paper, pencil, crayons and markers

- A newspaper article that services others

Activities:

  1. Gather students together to read Little T Learns to Share.
  2. Take a book walk by examining the cover. Have students discuss what the story is about.
  3. Read the story
  4. When you finish the story discuss what happened in the story.
  5. Ask questions such as: Why wouldn’t Little T share? How did the other children feel when Little T wouldn’t share? What did Little T’s mother tell him about being selfish? What happened when Little T did share? (These questions can be modified as needed for your classroom.)
  6. Next, ask the student whether they have known anyone who did not share with them and how it made them feel.
  7. Discuss using manners (e.g please, thank-you) when sharing. Discuss reasons it is important to use manners when sharing.
  8. Distribute paper to students.
  9. Each student will complete the following sentence stem; I can share with others by ______. Write this sentence stem on the board for the students to copy down.
  10. Students will also illustrate the sentence stem on the paper.

Assessment:

Ask student to define sharing. Read the selected newspaper article(s) aloud to students. Ask students to identify sharing actions in article(s).
