2016 Team Selection Process
Flag Teams (1st – 3rd Grades)
Teams are selected immediately during player evaluations. Players will be divided by size and will run a 40 yard dash which determines the team they will be placed on.

Tackle Teams (4th – 8th Grades)
The travel team selection will use a controlled, serpentine draft system, with coaches selecting their teams.
Players will be divided into 3 or 4 groups by weight depending on the number of teams at the particular grade level. Within those weight classes, players will be ranked using their combined evaluation system score that each player was given during evaluation week. Any player that does not attend evaluations will be discussed amongst the available coaches at the time of the draft, if not earlier, and the draft committee will determine an arbitrary score to be used in the overall ranking by weight class.
Teams pick playing cards to determine their selection positioning in the draft. The Ace through Jack (for 4 teams) will be used. The team with the Ace goes first in the heaviest weight class, with the 2 card, the King, picking second and so on. If a team picks first in the first round, they would pick last in the 2nd round of the same weight class, as an example.
In this controlled draft, each team would get a selection out of a predetermined, “rolling” number of players which is defined as twice the number of teams at that grade level up to 5 teams. If the grade level is divided into 5 teams or more, the rolling “window” is equal to the number of teams. For example, the next best eight players available in that weight class (if there were 4 teams) would be available for selection during any particular round until the last round where the number of players decline as a natural process of the last round by weight class.
There are specific drafting rules for coach’s kids.
4 teams or less
When the head coach’s kid or their one named assistant’s kid shows up in the designated window for a particular round, that player must be drafted in that round using their pick if they are ranked as one of the top 1 through 4 kids based on their evaluation score. If both the kids show up as one of the top 1 through 4 kids in the same round based on their evaluation score, they must be selected using the pick from that round and the pick that team gets from the very next round.
5 teams or more
The ranking of the player is irrelevant in this situation and the coach must select that player in the round they show up. If both players appear in the “window” during a round, that team must select one in that round and one in their next available pick in the next round.
There can be no passing on selecting a player by a team in any round when it is their turn to pick. Siblings must be drafted to the same team so when 1 of the siblings is taken in a round, the other sibling must be taken in the next available pick by that team when the sibling shows up in the window. Special requests by parents can be considered but are not a rule.
Any proposed changes need to be submitted in writing for consideration by the Board.
