Seymour Sampler – VOL. 2Chris Seymour, 4/2004

2.1Dave Matthews Band, Crash, “Say Goodbye,” Not sure the title or album this came from (not their first one) as it’s a copy. The beginning is why I included it – a lot of fun – but it ends up too congested and compressed.

2.2Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Sky is Crying, “Chitlins Con Carne,” My first EMIT/ EMIM experience – bought the Ren 80s that day. The ethereal quality of the cymbals and expression of Stevie’s tone stunned me. You can hear buzz of his guitar amp in between the notes, which feels very personal to me. Anyone know what the MFSL remaster sounds like? Jimmy Smith Trio (organ jazz) has another great version of this song.

2.3Lyle Lovett, The Road to Ensenada, “Her First Mistake,” First class music and engineering.

2.4Shirley Horn, You Won’t Forget Me, “You Stepped Out Of a Dream,” I love good acoustic bass. Do you find the walking notes even and smooth? Natural or bloated? I do love how well the Epsilons swing on a bass.

2.5Dave Brubeck Quartet, Time Out (20 bit Sony Remaster), “Take Five,” Standard audiophile recording, but maybe one person has not heard what an all-tube unprocessed 1959 recording can sound like.

2.6Oscar Peterson Trio w/ Milt Jackson, Very Tall (MFSL Remaster), “Reunion Blues,” 1961, all tubes, just way too much fun not to include. I love the tones/ timbres of the vibe and this song absolutely swings.

2.7Jacky Terrasson, Reach, “(I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons,” Recorded direct to tape and mastered by Mark Levinson on customized and Cello equipment.

2.8David Benoit, GRP Acoustic Jazz, “Letter to Evan,” How even are the notes as he plays the scales? Plenty of sub “room noise” bass which I nearly always appreciate – makes it sound more live. Some don’t or may find with subs an unnatural emphasis on room or floor effects. I love the large cathedral recordings that just have subsonic room “air”.

2.9Acoustic Alchemy, GRP Acoustic Jazz, “Santiago”

2.10Yo-Yo Ma, Obrigado Brazil, “Brasileirinho,” Also available on SACD – why would Sony release a new classical/ jazz recording on two formats? Didn’t find out until too late . It’s a nice album but not worth rebuying IMO.

2.11Yo-Yo Ma, Obrigado Brazil, “O Amor Em Paz”

2.12Patato & The Enriquillo Winds, Mapleshade’s Music Festival, “Fiesta de Montunos,” Such detail and brassiness to the horns.

2.13Chuck Brown / A La Carte Brass & Percussion, Mapleshade’s Music Festival, “Mellow Saxophone,” Fabulous imaging, textures, dynamics. Mapleshade recordings are always with no effects, no digital, no mixing, direct stereo to tape.

2.14The ARC Choir, Mapleshade’s Music Festival, “Shady Green Pastures,” I’ve mixed several large choral events like this – this sounds very live.

2.15Eva Cassady, Live at Blues Alley, “Had I a Golden Thread,” Not sure of the title as this is a copy. I also realize I did break my rule of not including any artist from others’ discs, but Eva is great. If I blow my EMIMs, it’ll be on her voice.

2.16Muddy Waters, Folk Singer (MFSL Remaster), “Good Morning School Girl,” 1963, tube, simple and great sound.

2.17“Glory” Soundtrack, “A Call to Arms,” Gets very detailed. Beware the last bass note.

Hope you enjoy it – I had fun putting it together.
