Sat11th April - AWAY vs Sittingbourne Community Archers (Full Results)
Sevenoaks AC visited Sittingbourne Community College Archers for the first Mid Kent League fixture of the new season on Saturday April 11th. Due to a last minute family emergency we were down to a bare bones of four archers - but bare bones in numbers does not equal bare bones in spirit.
We kicked off in what can best be described as "challenging" conditions, with a strong tail wind at the line becoming an even stronger cross-wind out at target distance - and within minutes of starting the rain was coming down like a monsoon, prompting a 10-minute delay at one point. As the day went on, the rain blew over, but the wind never let up, So there were no personal bests or record scores on the cards.
As it was, the team ofJamie Vos,Sarah Devine,Gilly CassonandDave Smithfound themselves pitched against about 30 archers from SCCA, many of whom were juniors - they deserve a lot of credit for opening up the sport to so many new archers. Once the scores had been calculated, Sittingbourne won the 'Pure Score' section with3,095points to our 2,675; and the 'Handicap Score'with5,723to our 5,626.
Congratulations go toGilly Casson(ladies recurve - Windsor round) andJamie Vos(gents barebow Albion round) for their places at the top of the individual archerleaderboards afterround one.
Sun10th May - HOME vs Black Lion(Full Results)
On Sunday a hearty band of Sevenoaks Archers 'braved' the searing sun in their second MKL match of the season, at home to Black Lion. As with our first match againstSittingbourne, honours were shared, with Black Lion winning the Handicap scoring and Sevenoaks triumphantin the Pure Score competition, with the four top scores coming fromPaula Young,Sarah Devine,Jack RoseandDiane Pople. Big thanks go to the entire team - the above four plusJamie Vos,Alan Rose,Claire Rose,Doug MedhurstandDave Smithand aspecial thanks toDom Devinefor his sterling work as field captain.
Sunday 31st May - AWAY vs Fox Archers(Full Results)
Another away trip, another four-person team, another soaking! Doug Medhurst,Gilly Casson,Diane PopleandDave Smithmade the arduous journey all the way to the other side of Sevenoaks (well, Otford, really) for an away match with Fox. In keeping with weather patterns so far in 2015, it rained with persistent drizzle and one or two heavy showers too, which made the going for some.
Doug was giving his longbow its first MKL outing and with Di's barebow and Gilly's good form we were hoping for a decent outcome. Sadly, Sevenoaks were up against a large Fox contingent and Sevenoaks lost on both pure score and handicap score. However, special mention should go to Gilly who started out the day with a handicap of 55 and shot a 730-point Windsor - that's a handicap of 49 and a first class score, achieved in very testing conditions. This puts Gilly at thetop of teh leaderboard for an individual score for the Ladies Recurve Windsor round (3 match rule applies).
Sunday 12th July- HOMEvs Falcon Archers (Full Results)
Match four of Sevenoaks AC's Mid Kent League campaign took place at home in the grounds of Wildernesse House. The team were up against Falcon Archers of Maidstone. The weather was damp, with a patchy light drizzle and a very light breeze which thankfully never really turned into proper rain and allowed for some decent shooting conditions.
Sevenoaks had a numerical advantage, with nine shooters to Falcon's five, and it soon became apparent that we had the advantage in performance as well.Doug Medhurstshared his St. George round with three Falcon archers and put in an excellent performance bybeating all three of his target companions!
Jamie Voshad a very good Albion round with a his new-found love of barebow andJack Rosealso did well, falling just short of a Junior Bowman score and is currently placed as the top individual score for the Junior Recurve Albion round (3 match rule applies).
Sevenoaks ladies didn't disappoint with some good shooting byClaire Rose,Sarah DevineandPaula Young. Both Sarah and Paula achieved personal bests for their Albion rounds, with scores of 772 and 840 respectively, and Sarah is currently holding the top individual score for the Ladies Recurve Albion round (3 match rule applies).
Sevenoaks emerged as clear victors in both the pure score and the handicap score categories - the first time this season we've managed to win both sections.
It transpired that ALL of our archers outscored Falcon on pure score, which is a real achievement. Congratulations also go toBryan WhyteandSarah Burdett, both making their MKL debuts for the club, and Sarah falling just short of her second class classification.
Sunday 9th August - HOME vs Abbey Bowmen (Full Results)
Sevenoaks AC suffered double defeat in the August round of Mid Kent League matches, although under some, let's just say "trying" circumstances. We played host to Abbey, but they declined to shoot with usin protest at our club ground's restriction on compound bows, instead splitting their team to shoot at two other clubs over two days.
Sarah Devine,Paula Young,Claire RoseandJack Rosetook the team scoring honours for pure scores, while Claire and Jack were joined byDoug MedhurstandSarah Burdettin the handicap scores stakes. Of particular note was Sarah Burdett, who made the handicap scoresheet top four on only her second MKL appearance - nice going! It was also nice to welcomeDomingo Sanz,Amparo CastelloandMike Bradneyto their first MKL shoots.
So, with just one fixture left this season, Sevenoaks are firmly entrenched in mid-table of Division 2 - third out of seven for pure score, and fourth out of seven for handicap. However, we are definitely making waves as a club, with some of our individuals serving notice that we're not just friendly faces, we can shoot a bit as well.
As so often this season, our ladies '(Un)Holy Trinity' are blazing the trail! After match five in the Albion round ladies recurve, Paula Young holds first place with a score of 840, Claire Rose is in second place with 786 and Sarah Devine makes it a clean sweep with 772 in third place. Not to be outdone, Gilly Casson's 730 point performance for ladies recurve at Fox sees her still in top place for the ladies recurve Windsor round. Further honourable mention goes to Jack Rose, who's 754 Albion score sees him at the top spot of the gents U-18 recurve ranking.
The final match of the season will be away to Swan Archers. It is currently scheduled for Sunday 20th September and as ever, if you are interested in representing your club, just get in touch withDave Smith, Tournaments Officer.
