Session 6 Making a Silhouette
National Curriculum / Art: To improve their mastery of art and design techniques.
Teaching Objectives / To go through a decision-making process using skills and knowledge they have gained and create a silhouette.
Resources
Silhouette Stations (from Session 5); Cameras.
Whole class: Explain to chn that they are going to think about the form and mood of a picture before they decide what their final silhouettes will look like. Show the Buckland silhouette from Session 1 and ask the chn about its form and mood:
·  What shape does the artist create with all the figures?
·  Is it balanced or unbalanced?
·  What is in the centre of the picture? Where is your eye drawn?
·  How does the work make you feel?
·  Why do you think you feel like this?
·  Does the work create an atmosphere?
Divide the class into mixed-ability groups of 4 or 5. Each group’s challenge is to make a silhouette in one of the ways they tried out in Session 5. Firstly, chn should revisit their sketchbooks to look for ideas for the answers to the questions below. Ask chn to write down their decisions in their sketchbooks and to refer back to earlier pages to explain why they have made their choices.
·  Which process are you going to use?
·  Who will be in the silhouette?
·  What objects will be in the silhouette?
·  How will everything be arranged?
·  What kind of mood are you trying to create?
Groups should then discuss their responses and come up with one set of answers that will influence their silhouette picture. Ask each team to come and explain to you what they're going to do before starting work on their silhouettes – try to encourage different groups to use different techniques. Collect their answers for reference in the plenary.
Easy/ Medium/ Hard
When you're happy with their strategies, groups may start creating their silhouettes.
Plenary / Give lots of praise to chn for their efforts in creating interesting silhouettes. Focus on the answers they gave before they made their silhouettes. Pick out something good in each team's work to share with the class.
Outcomes / Children will
·  Analyse the form and mood of a piece of art
·  Make decisions based on previous experience and ideas about how to make a piece of art
·  Work as a team to make a collaborative piece of art
