GREERTON LIONS PRESIDENT

President’s Report December 2016

The silly season has pounced out at us!!

We have year- end school prize giving events to attend, Christmas shoe boxes to give away, (Have you done yours?), and several Christmas events to attend.

The Christmas tree in the GreertonVillage square looks grand, and by night the lights in the trees around Greerton look very pretty. Thanks to those who put it all up, great job and already I have heard positive comments.

Lions Christmas cakes are selling well as are Lions calendars and the fertiliser is now all sold out with a big demand for more, well done everyone.

Still to come are the Tauranga Santa parade on 3rd December as well as our own Christmas party (don’t forget your gifts), Carols on the Strand on 11th and Carols in the Square at Greerton on 15th.

After that most of us can relax until 17th January.

And what is in store for the new year? Just to mention a few things, our membership committee is working hard towards a membership drive in March and the Projects team are exploring the possibility of regular sausage sizzles as fund raisers. The Programme committee have a number of interesting guest speakers lined up and there are several collections lined up supporting others.

So I would like to wish everyone Happy Christmas and a good New Year. Come back to Lions all fired up and ready to face an exciting year, be ready to pick up the challenges and be aware that there are many people and families that are not as fortunate as us.

See you all soon.

(President Alan Paterson)

To all members

I need to complete a report by the 10th December. In order to do so I need the help of all committee chairs and members with specific duties to help me report on the following:

1. Service Challenge activities planned for the rest of the 2016/17 Lions Year i.e. Youth, Vision, Environment and Hunger.

2. Estimated no. of Service Challenge beneficiaries.

3. Legacy projects planned for the 2016/17 Lions Year. To assist you with this, please familiarise yourself by googling "Community, Legacy projects Lions Clubs ".

4. Your most significant Service Challenge activity.

I would really appreciate your assistance on this. Please treat this as an urgent request.

This report I will send to the Centennial Celebration Co-ordinator and our Cabinet Secretary.

Regards,

Ron Collicott, Club Secretary

BAD PARROT

A young man named John received a parrot as a gift. The parrot had a bad attitude and an even worse vocabulary.

Every word out of the bird's mouth was rude, obnoxious and laced with profanity. John tried and tried to change the bird's attitude by
consistently saying only polite words, playing soft music and anything else he could think of to 'clean up' the bird's vocabulary.

Finally, John was fed up and he yelled at the parrot.

The parrot yelled back. John shook the parrot and the parrot got angrier and even more rude. John, in desperation, threw up his hand, grabbed the bird and put him in the freezer. For a few minutes the parrot squawked and kicked and screamed.

Then suddenly there was total quiet. Not a peep was heard for over a minute.

Fearing that he'd hurt the parrot, John quickly opened the door to the freezer. The parrot calmly stepped out on to John's outstretched arms and said "I believe I may have offended you with my rude language and actions.

I'm sincerely remorseful for my inappropriate transgressions and I fully intend to do everything I can to correct my rude and unforgivable behaviour."

John was stunned at the change in the bird's attitude.

As he was about to ask the parrot what had made such a dramatic change in his behaviour, the bird spoke-up, very softly, "May I ask what the turkey did?"

LIONS INTERNATIONAL

The ‘Shaky Isles’ lived up to its name again on the night of Sunday 13 November 2016 with the upper South Island well shaken with numerous severe earthquakes. The towns of Cheviot, Amberley, Kaikoura, Culverden and Seddon bore the brunt of the 7.8 magnitude quake followed by literally thousands of aftershocks which continue to this day. As is customary when disaster strikes, the Lions Club members in these damaged towns and farming areas quickly moved into action and have been supporting their stricken communities since. Lions Clubs International Foundation immediately responded to District Governor Malcolm Williams plea and made available, the day after the quake, a $US10,000 emergency grant with promises of further assistance as and when required. Our own Lloyd Morgan Lions Clubs Charitable Trust similarly granted $10,000 for emergency relief among those affected the most. Yes, within 24 hours of the 7.8m earthquake, DG Malcolm had access to urgently needed funds for food, water and other urgent perishables – the power of Lions Clubs International!
