The recent 5.8 magnitude earthquake in Virginia and Hurricane Irene's path to the East Coast serve as a reminder why adoption and compliance of building codes and standards is important to public safety.

Aug. 25, 2011 | Attend ICC Board Meetings. See ICC elected leaders in action at their Oct. 29 and Nov. 3 meetings at the 2011 Annual Conference and Final Action Hearings in Phoenix.

Aug. 24, 2011 | ICC Code Action Committees to Meet Sept. 20-21. The ICC Code Action Committees; Building Code Action Committee, Fire Code Action Committee and Plumbing Mechanical, Fuel Gas Code Action Committee; will meet to discuss all three CAC's logistics and procedures, and the initiation of the CAC activities for the 2012/2013 Code Cycle.

Aug. 24, 2011 | ICC, AACE to Develop Joint Exams for Inspector Certifications. Members of both the Code Council and the American Association of Code Enforcement for the first time will take the same exams for certification as either a Property Maintenance & Housing Inspector or a Zoning Inspector.

Aug. 24, 2011 | Federal Grant Opportunity Available for Jurisdictions. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development released the Community Challenge Planning Grant Program to offer assistance to jurisdictions in expanding their communities in a safe and sustainable manner. The deadlines for application submissions is Sept. 9.

Aug. 23, 2011 | 2012/2013 Code Change Cycle Information Available. The Code Council has recently posted the Code Change Proposal form online for the 2012/2013 Code Change Cycle. The list of the Group A and Group B Committees responsibilities also is available on ICC's website.

Aug. 23, 2011 | Code Council, Honduras to Develop Building Code Based on the International Building Code. The Honduras Institute of Architects and the Code Council will develop a national building code for Honduras based on the 2006 International Building Code Spanish edition.

Aug. 22, 2011 | Call for Nominations to the ICC Board of Directors. The Code Council is inviting letters of interest, resumes and any other information deemed necessary by candidates seeking to be a Director on the ICC Board. To assure an interview with the nominating committee, letters of interest, etc., must be received by Sept. 2.

Aug. 18, 2011 | Membership Councils to Meet at Annual Conference. The Global and Building Official Councils will meet from 1-3 p.m. and the Fire, Sustainability, and PMG Official Councils will meet from 3-5 p.m. on Oct. 30 during ICC's 2011 Annual Conference. Join a Membership Council before Oct. 15 and be eligible to win one of 10 iPads.

Aug. 18, 2011 | Coalition’s Congressional Testimony Advocates for Financial Incentive to Adopt, Enforce Building Codes. The Code Council assisted in the drafting of testimony presented by the BuildStrong Coalition urging Congress to pass the Safe Building Code Incentive Act.

Industry News

Aug. 17, 2011 | Housing Starts, Permits Down in July. According to the Structural Building Components Association July report, housing starts fell 1.5 percent to 604,000 units while permits declined 3.2 percent to 597,000 units.

Aug. 12, 2011 | Standards Boost Business Campaign Gives U.S. Companies Competitive Edge. The Code Council along with the American National Standards Institute and 24 other partners across the standardization community have launched Standards Boost Business, an outreach initiative to help corporate America harness the power of standards and conformance to boost business performance and gain a foothold over the global competition.

Aug. 10, 2011 | BuildStrong Coalition Testifies on Capitol Hill. Advocating for support of the 2011 Safe Building Codes Incentive Act, testimony focused on the need for strong building codes and enforcement, and legislation that would reward states with statewide code adoption and enforcement with an increase in post-disaster mitigation funding. Board Meeting News

CDRAC Recommendations Adopted with Two Additions. The Code Development Review Ad-Hoc Committee presented an overview of activities to the ICC Board. The Board adopted all CDRAC recommendations along with two additional recommendations. Click to continue.

Board Approves Changes to IECC, IRC Code Development Processes. The ICC Board approved changes to the code development processes for the International Energy Conservation Code and the International Residential Code, effective with the 2012/2013 Code Development Cycle. Click for more.

Status of ICC's Call for Committees. The ICC Board appointed a new Codes and Standards Council representing stakeholders across several disciplines, as well as the Governing Committees for the five new discipline Membership Councils. All applicants to all other Committees will be notified at the end of the appointment process which will occur at the July and October ICC Board meetings.

ICC Board Denies IECC Voter Eligibility Challenges. The three appeals challenged the eligibility of voters at the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) 2010 Final Action Hearings. The decision affirmed the recommendation of the Appeals Board.

The Code Council is pleased to announce the completion of the Chapter Data upgrade. As part of the "Year of the Member," we are pleased to offer you the ability to view and maintain your Chapter information through your individual ICC account, 24/7. Effective today, Chapter Presidents have complete access to their Chapter information via ICC's website, and all Chapter Officers will have the same access soon. Please set aside some time today to review your Chapter information now available on the ICC website.

U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Administrator Craig Fugate to be keynote speaker for this year's Annual Banquet, Wednesday, November 2, 6:00 pm – 10:00 pm
A renowned leader in emergency management and preparedness, Administrator Fugate will address the critical role of Building and Fire Officials as part of the emergency management team and the importance of codes in disaster mitigation.
W. Craig Fugate was appointed by President Barack Obama and was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on May 13, 2009 to serve as the Administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). On May 18, 2009 Administrator Fugate reported to FEMA bringing with him a wealth of leadership experience to the emergency management community. Prior to coming to FEMA, Mr. Fugate served as Director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM). In that role since 2001, he managed 138 full-time staff and a budget of $745 million. His agency coordinated disaster response, recovery, preparedness and mitigation efforts with each of the state's 67 counties and local governments. Mr. Fugate began his emergency management career as a volunteer firefighter, Emergency Paramedic, and finally as a Lieutenant with the Alachua County Fire Rescue. Eventually, he moved from exclusive fire rescue operations to serving as the Emergency Manager for Alachua County in Gainesville, Florida. He spent a decade in that role until May 1997 when he was appointed Bureau Chief for Preparedness and Response for FDEM.
Lt. General Russel L. Honoré, USA (Ret.) will be this year's keynote speaker at the ICC Foundation Luncheon, Monday, October 31, 11:45 am – 1:00 pm
Our keynote speaker is the popular and engaging CNN contributor and author of Survival: How a Culture of Preparedness Can Save You and Your Family from Disasters, Lt. General Russel L. Honoré, USA (Ret.). His presentation entitled, "The New Normal: Leadership and Preparedness in the 21st Century" will be sure to engage the audience.
