New Tools for the Toolbox: Adopting Evidence-Based Practices to Enhance Substance Abuse Treatment with an emphasis on NIDA/SAMSHA Blending Products.

As we look to the future of medical homes, integrated services, and better patient-centered care in the treatmentof substance use disorders, we are ever mindful of the importance of our patients showing up in order to benefit from treatment. This course will focus on several ways we can increase engagement and retention, including using some powerful tools like motivational incentives, motivational interviewing, and medication assisted treatment. The NIDA/SAMSHA Blending Products have been created to assist both administrators and clinicians in making meaningful changes to treatment that will advance long-term recovery. Each participant will have the opportunity to assess their agencies current processes and procedures, and we will work collaboratively to identify what adoptions could be made.


Constructing a Better Health Care System

Changes in healthcare delivery are pushing integration to the front of the behavioral and primary care fields. The purpose of this course is to help attendees better understand the opportunities for integration, the factors behind the different approaches and systems, and opportunities for increased efficiency and quality of care. We will take a look at the current silo systems in which we deliver addiction and mental health services and explore how to tear down these barriers to create a behavioral health system in an alignment with primary health care and which will best serve the needs of our patients.

Working with Patients in a Changing Environment: Supporting Recovery and Resilience using Wellness Planning and Ethical Practices

This course will explore the various facets of recovery: how we define it, when does it begin, and what the role of treatment is in this process. It will review the key principals of the Recovery Oriented System of Care (ROSC) and how to do wellness planning which supports the whole person in their recovery. This course is for both the addiction clinicians and for peer staff. Together, they will build a common language for recovery support services, look at the skills and function that each provides in a recovery system as well as examine boundary and ethical issues that might arise in a ROSC system due to their unique roles in the recovery process. This course will use case examples, role plays and will engages individuals to bring their own experiences to the course to share.

Healing through Story: An Experiential Workshop for Clinicians and Recovery Coaches

All cultures have used stories to promote change. Twelve Step groups use personal story to inspire change. Master psychotherapists draw on story to facilitate change. As clinicians, we can also use the power of story to connect with clients to heal and transform their lives. In this experiential class, participants will gain a theoretical understanding of the value of story and immerse themselves in healing stories. Both clinicians and recovery coaches will acquire specific, practical tools to incorporate stories into their work with individuals and groups. Particular attention will be paid to the use of personal recovery stories in the therapeutic setting. Come replenish yourself and rejuvenate your work through the magic of story. The only prerequisite for this class is having heard a story that you loved.

Gambling Addiction Course
In addition a two day course on Gambling Addiction will be provided during this time as well. The course will be provided in cooperation with the University of Maryland. The instructor of the course will be Joanna Franklin. More detail concern the course will be forthcoming.
