Overview of Role:

ZSL is looking to recruit a Senior Veterinary Officer (SVO) who will manage the clinical veterinary team at ZSL London Zoo and act as a deputy to ensure continuous services to support the health and welfare of all animals in ZSL Living Collections. The SVO will also actively be involved in the teaching of graduate and undergraduate students (including those enrolled on the MSc in Wild Animal Health and Wild Animal Biology) on placement in the Department, and the European College of Zoological Medicine (ECZM) Resident in Zoo Health Management.

Under the general supervision of the Head of Veterinary Services (HoVS) the post-holder will be expected to carry out relevant research and publish peer-reviewed papers, contribute to conferences and otherwise present ZSL as a centre of excellence in the field of zoological medicine. They shall also be expected to contribute to the support of the ZSL portfolio of international conservation programmes as appropriate.

The successful applicant will be committed to demonstrating the highest standards, and continuous improvement, of animal care. The individual should bring a collaborative approach to working with colleagues.

Other main duties of the SVO will include:

  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with staff across ZSL in order to facilitate the achievement of the Veterinary Department’s strategic aims.
  • In a professional and timely manner, produce routine reports (on matters clinical, pathological and welfare) allowing for rapid, collective action to continuously improve standards of care and welfare.
  • Provide wildlife health input to, and participation in, Conservation Programmes/Institute of Zoology/Living Collections projects that require it, such that synergy is created and veterinary factors considered and addressed.

Person Specification:

  • Membership of the RCVS essential.
  • Budgetary experience.
  • Proven management experience.
  • Hold a further qualification in the field of wild animal health or equivalent qualification in a related field.
  • Hold a European College of Zoological Medicine (ECZM) Diploma in the specialty of Zoo Health Management, or have the necessary experience and publication record to achieve de facto status before April 2017.
  • Extensive experience in the veterinary care of zoo and wild animals across a very wide range of species essential.
  • Experience in practical training of veterinary techniques and teaching in an academic environment.
  • Able to demonstrate clear evidence, through long-term affiliations and memberships, of a commitment to and knowledge of, conservation and the health and welfare of wild animals.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with diverse personalities in a small team.
  • Excellent decision making skills, organisational skills and able to manage multiple priorities.
  • Ability to produce reports and peer-reviewed publications, and to present at conferences.
  • Ability to chair meetings effectively and efficiently.
  • Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule that may include weekends, evenings, and holidays.
