Applications are invited for a full-time fixed-term joint appointment with NUI Galway and West North West Hospital Group , which will be available as soon as possible for three years. The Senior Lecturer Fixed Term in Medical Education/Director of Simulation is responsible for planning, designing, implementing, and evaluating simulation-based learning and assessment across the continuum from standardised patients through task based trainers, to high-fidelity simulators. The post holder should undertake research on the use of simulation in healthcare education.

The main purposes of the post are:

  • The management of the education programmes, conductingCollegedevelopment, and enhancing student experiences through use of simulation and other resources.
  • The development of a sustainable research facility in the area of education, assessment and simulation methodology and the application for research grants which are important responsibilities for the success and on-going improvement of the programme and centre.
  • To ensure quality improvement initiatives and the integration of the West North West Hospitals Group values into learning and development programmes.

Requirements

Essential

  • Basic medical/nursing degree plus a higher postgraduate medical/nursing qualification (membership, fellowship, postgraduate higher diploma)
  • A minimum of 6 years’ experience using a variety of simulation based education modalities (hi fidelity manikin based, task trainers, computer based learning, virtual reality, standardised patients).
  • Continuous use of simulation for 4 years in the healthcare setting.
  • Experience in curriculum development, design and delivery
  • Experience working in healthcare simulation across undergraduate and post graduate curricula
  • Experience working on collaborative and innovative projects

Desirable:

  • Academic qualification in medical education.
  • Experience conducting educational research.
  • Experience writing grant applications.
  • Peer reviewed publications in the areas of medical education and simulation

Details of Service / On 15th May 2013 Minister for Health James Reilly announced a major re-organisation of Irish hospitals into six largely autonomous groups aimed at providing improved outcomes for patients.
The West North West Hospitals Group includes;

Reporting Relationship / The Lecturer Fixed Term in Medical Education, Director of Simulation reports to the executive councils of the Hospital Group through the Chief Academic Officer, Professor Anthony O’Regan and the College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences through the Dean of the College, Professor Timothy O’Brien.
Purpose of the Post / PROGRAMME PILOTING:
  1. Overseeing the development of a culture and a centre for interprofessional learning and student/staffdevelopment across the undergraduate and post graduate curricula.
  2. Development of sustainable programmes, delivered by an expert team, with a focus on patient safety, leadership andteam based learning as pilot projects. These to include undergraduate, intern and postgraduate programmes and scholarship (second level) programmes.
  3. Using pilot programmes to develop faculty in the teaching and learning of technical and non-technical skills.
  4. Overseeing the evaluation of team based learning programmes by an expert team.
THE DELIVERY OF TEAMBASED INTERPROFESSIONAL LEARINING, PATIENT SAFETY AND RESEARCH:
The Lecturer Fixed Term in Medical Education, Director of Simulation is responsible for planning, designing, implementing, and evaluating simulation-based learning and assessment across the continuum from standardised patients through task based trainers, to high-fidelitysimulators. The post holder should undertake research on the use of simulation in healthcare education.
THE MAIN PURPOSES OF THE POST ARE:
1. The management of the education programmes, conducting faculty development, and enhancing student experiences through use of simulation and other resources.
AND
2. The development of a sustainable research facility in the area of education, assessment and simulation methodology and the application for research grants which are important responsibilities for the success and on-going improvement of the programme and centre.
AND
3. To ensure quality improvement initiatives and the integration of the West North West Hospitals Group values into learning and development programmes.
Functional Focus / To establish NUI Galway and WNWHG as a centre of excellence for inter professional team based learning and development through the use of multiple simulation modalities
Principal Responsibilities /
  • Lead preparation for accreditation by Society for Simulation in Healthcare.
  • Develop entrepreneurial initiatives related to clinical simulation that extend beyond academic programming.
  • Lead curricular integration of state-of-the-art instructional technologies/simulation throughout the academic programs of the schools and postgraduate training bodies, with interprofessional education initiatives.
  • Design and implement educational programmes for faculty development in use of clinical simulation, debriefing, and assessment.
  • Design and evaluate clinical simulation curriculum to ensure that expected competencies are being taught to students.
  • Ensure that instruction is consistent with national professional standards to assure skill and knowledge competencies of graduates.
  • Design and evaluate acute care programmes for interns and other NCHDs
  • Serve as an educational consultant to schools and other initiatives.
  • Prepare reports on all program activities, standards, accreditation requirements, external meetings, educational concerns, and student successes.
  • Maintain data and assists in HRB-approved studies.
  • Seek grant funding to support innovative simulation programs.
  • Plan for replacement of existing equipment and purchase of new technology.
  • Represent the facility and University at regional and national conferences.

Principal Duties / Initially in the pilot phase:
  • Organise, evaluate and deliver key pilot programmes across undergraduate, intern, postgraduate and second level institutions and across the disciplines of medicine, nursing and allied health professionals as a route to developing faculty, generating funding, buy in from hospitals, University and local industry.
  • Develop students and staff with a focus on patient safety and the publication of quality research in these areas will establish the WNWHG as a leader in the delivery of quality healthcare education and training.
Once a centre is established:
  • Manage the use of simulation resources including labs and centres.
  • Lead curricular integration of all types of simulation including standardised patients through to task based training and computer based learning to hi fidelity manikin based simulation throughout the academic programmes of the schools and postgraduate programmes, with inter professional initiatives.
  • Design and implement educational programs and assessment tools for faculty development and continuing education in use of simulation and innovations in clinical education.
  • Work with a Director of Research to collect data on learning outcomes and programme evaluation of simulation exercises and collaborates with faculty on disseminating findings through peer-reviewed publications.
  • Raise awareness of the use of simulation resources internally and externally through entrepreneurial and grant funded opportunities.
