Birth, Family Life and Academic Qualification:
Mr. Jhalanath Khanal was born on 20thMay 1950 at Shakhejung-4, Ilam District, Mechi Zone, the far eastern part of Nepal. He is lived by his spouse Mrs. Ravi Laksmee Chitrakar and his son Nirbhik Chitrakar Khanal. He has completed Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Political Science and History from Tribhuwan University, Kathmandu, Nepal before taking full party responsibility with underground political work.

Struggles, Jail Journey and Political Life:
  • He actively involved in the democratic movement of the country and started to lead the student movement for democracy, nationalism, progress and welfare since 1965. He became President of Mechi Student Union from 1967-68.
  • He became one of the student leaders of All Nepal National Free Students' Union (ANNFSU) from the third National Conference, 1969.
  • He became a science teacher of Galkot Secondary School Baglung District, Dhaulagiri Zone in western Nepal from 1970-71 along with the party mission to organize and mobilize rural masses, students and teachers. But he was expelled by the then Zonal Commissioner of Dhaulagiri Zone and then put him into the jail for some months under the State Offense Act.
  • Then again he joined as a Science teacher at Bhanubhakta Secondary School, Mangal Bare, Ilam District, Mechi Zone in the Far Eastern part of Nepal from 1972-73. But the then government again could not tolerate being him a teacher and, as a consequence, he was put into jail again for fourteen months at Ilam under Public Security Act.
  • Detained for six-months at Ilam during the period of coronation of the late king Birendra under Public Security Act, 1974-75.
  • Since 1975 then he went completely underground.
  • Founder member of National Co-ordination Committee of all Communist Revolutionaries of Nepal in 1975.
  • Again Arrested at Jhapa District on November, 1976 and imprisoned under State Offence Act until April, 1979
  • Founder member of The Communist Party of Nepal (ML) in 1978
  • Due to growing and expanding mass movement for democracy, King Birendra declared referendum and also declared a general amnesty to the then political prisoners, at that situation he got release unconditionally from Jhapa jail, 1979.
  • Since April 1979 to 1990 he spent a long underground political life as one of the leading figures in left movement of the country.
  • General Secretary of Communist Party of Nepal(ML) from 1982-90.
  • Memberof the Central High Command during the Movement for Democracy in 1990.
  • Minister for Agriculture, Land Reform and Management, and Forest and Environment in the Interim Government formed in 1990. That Government made the constitution of Nepal 1990 and it held the first general election in 1991.
  • Member of Parliament elected in the general election held in 1991 in Nepal.
  • Standing committee and central committee member elected from 5th national congress held in 1993.
  • Member of Parliament elected again in the general election held in 1994 in Nepal.
  • Minister for information and communication in 1997 coalition Government.
  • Standing committee and central committee member elected from 6th National Congress held in 1998.
  • Standing committee and central committee member elected from 7th National Congress held in 2003.
  • After King Gyanendra usurped all power in his hands on Feb.1, 2005 all parties were banned and leaders of almost all parties were arrested. In such condition he again became underground leading the democratic movement in the country.
  • Since 3rd Feb, 2005 he became Acting General Secretary of the Central Committee of CPN(UML) and led the historical democratic movement against autocratic Monarchy led by Gyanendra Shah.
  • Chairman of Puspalal Memorial Foundation, from 1999 to 2006.
  • As the acting General Secretary of CPN (UML), he contributed to form Seven Party Alliance to fight against Autocratic Monarchy on the basis of common democratic program.
  • Worked as an international representative of the Seven Party Alliance during the movement against the autocratic monarchy in 2006 and contributed to mobilize the support of international community to the democratic movement of the people of Nepal. After the victory of Democratic Revolution 2006 there was election of Constituent Assembly of the country. He was elected as a member of CA from the far-eastern Nepal and he became the Leader of the Parliamentary Party of CPN(UML) in 2008.
  • After becoming the Leader of the Parliamentary Party CPN(UML) Central Committee elected him unanimously again as the General Secretary of the Party in 2008.
  • The Eighth National Congress of the Party held in Butawal, Nepal on 24th Feb 2009 elected him as the Chairman of the CPN(UML) for a five-year period.
  • Became 34th Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal on 3rd February 2011 by the election in the CA cum Legislature Parliament of Nepal.
  • As Prime Minister, he played leading role in the peace process of the country. Due to this ground work he had done and later as Chairman of CPN(UML), the entire peace process was completed in 2012. To this end, he made incessant efforts as PM and later as Chairman of the Party.
  • He led the Party during the second CA election held on 19th November 2013. By this election, the Party under his leadership regained its position lost in the first CA election held in 2008. The Party became close second largest party in the new CA.
  • He led the Party in organizing ninth National Congress in July 2014, where a new leadership was democratically elected. He became Senior Leader of the Party.

International Visits:
Visited China, United States of America, Mexico, Japan, Singapore, Australia, Thailand, Democratic Peoples' Republic of Korea, United Kingdom , France, Germany, Russia, Bulgaria, Albania, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Belgium, Belarus, Switzerland, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Israel, Mexico, Hongkong, India, Kazakhstan, Greece, and Guatemala. These visits were made as a minister, as a member of parliament, as a leader and member of party delegations in various occasions.
Turkey (official visit to participate in 4th LDC conference in the capacity of PM of Nepal and Chair of LDC Bureau) in May 2011.
