Seminar Discussions
On Thursday, 2/9, you will participate in seminar discussions about issues from the last few chapters. Prepare brief notes for the following questions. The seminars will be held during the first half of class, and you will take the Chapter 21/22 Partner Multiple Choice quiz during the second half of class that day.
Buck v. Bell eugenics reading
- What does the study of eugenics reveal about American culture and values in the early 20th century? How do issues of race, class, and gender come into play in eugenics as well as the Buck v. Bell case?
- What other trends in American history could you connect to the eugenics movement or the Buck v. Bell case? What do you think is the legacy of support for eugenics in America?
Chapter 21
- To what extent was late 19th century and early 20th century United States expansionism a continuation of the past United States expansionism and to what extent was it a departure?
- Analyze the ways in which the federal government sought support on the home front for the war effort during the First World War. To what extent did the role of the federal government change during this time?
Chapter 22
- In what ways did economic conditions and developments in the arts and entertainment help create the reputation of the 1920’s as the “Roaring Twenties?” What does this American national culture that emerged from the 1920s reveal about the values of changes in that era?
- Analyze the origins and outcomes of the intense cultural conflicts (prohibition, religion, immigration, etc.) on the 1920s. What do these conflicts reveal about the values and changing expectations of Americans during the 1920s?
- Discuss the changing gender dynamics from the 1890s-1920s. What developments in society, politics, and economics as well as assumptions about the nature of men and women impact American culture?
