  • The Effects of Using ICT

Widespread use of ICT has affected the way people work and has reshaped our present workplaces. This semester, students are going to focus on discussing the effects of using ICT.Notes covering this section will be about social effects of ICT, health effects of ICT, safety issues with ICT, hacking and hackers, malware and viruses, software copyright, internet development, and internet use issues.

  • The Effects of Using ICT

Through this course, students will be able to:

Explain what is meant by software copyright

Describe what a computer virus is, what hacking is and explain the measures that must be taken in order to protect against hacking and viruses

Describe the effects of information and communication technology on patterns of employment, including areas of work where there is increased unemployment

Describe the effects of microprocessor-controlled devices in the home, including their effects on leisure time, social interaction and the need to leave the home

Describe the capabilities and limitations of ICT

Describe the use of internet developments such as Web 2.0, blogs, wikis, digital media uploading websites, and new types of social networking websites

Discuss issues relating to information found on the internet, including unreliability, undesirability and the security of data transfer including phishing, pharming and SPAM

Describe the potential health problems related to the prolonged use of ICT equipment, for example repetitive strain injury (RSI), back problems, eye problems and some simple strategies for preventing these problems

Describe a range of safety issues related to using computers and measures for preventing accidents

  1. Course Expectation
  • Students should be punctual to attend every session and take responsibility for learning the material/information presented during classes.If students are absent, they have to actively find materials that they miss by contacting me or their friends to update the notes.
  • Students should prepare their equipment (notes, pencil/pen, flash disk, clear holder, agenda, etc.) before the lessons start.
  • Students are expected to be fully prepared with all necessary materials to be actively participating in individual, group, and whole class activities and discussion.
  • Students are expected to do every assignment and all homework given and may receive a reduced grade for poor, incomplete, or late assignments.
  • Students are encouraged to save their assignments on their own clear holder/folder/flash disk properly.

Students will be graded based on:

  • Daily assessment 1 (30%)
  • UTS (20%)
  • Daily assessment 2 (30%)
  • UAS (20%)

Daily assessment will consist of written assignment, quiz, performance task, project, and effort. Reading passport theme: The Effects of Using ICT (book/e-book), due date: Monday, 15 August 2011 (week 5).
