Self Edit – Argumentative Research Paper

Introduction:

 How did I begin my paper?

 What was interesting about it?

 What is the my thesis statement (what am I trying to prove)?

Body paragraph #1:

 Did the first body paragraph talk about one topic only? What was that topic?

 Did the first body paragraph have one fact to support the author’s views?

 Was the fact cited within the paragraph?

 Did I explain the fact and add more of my own opinion about the topic?

Body paragraph #2:

 What transition did I use to go from the first body paragraph to the next? If I did not use one, show me the one you will use.

 Did the second body paragraph talk about one topic only? What was that topic?

 Did the second body paragraph have one fact to support the my views?

 Was the fact cited within the paragraph?

 Did I explain the fact and add more of my own opinion about the topic?

Body paragraph #3:

 What transition did I use to go from the second body paragraph to the third? If I did not use one, show me one you will use.

 Is the third body paragraph the counterargument?

 What is my counterargument?

 Did I include a fact to support the counterargument?

 Did the I explain the fact and argue against it, providing more reasons why I DON’T agree?

Conclusion:

 Did I restate the thesis (as it has already been proven) as the first line of the conclusion?

 Did I begin with a phrase such as: in conclusion, in summary, so I think…etc.? If so, give me a different way to begin your paragraph.

 Did I summarize my two subtopics and connect my ideas?

 Did I mention the counterargument in my conclusion? If so, take it out.

 Did I mention any new ideas or add in any new factual information in the conclusion? If so, take it out.

 What is my last line? Is it powerful? Is it something that will resonate with your reader long after they have finished reading the paper?
