Rules and Procedures
- Round 1: Individual Contestants in a traditional bee (6:30-7:30)
- The individual round will consist of up to 30 people per round. Each contestant will receive his or her own word.
- The judges will pronounce the words slowly and clearly and provide additional requested information. And ultimately judge whether the spelling is correct.
- The Speller listens carefully to his/her word. The Speller may ask the Judge to repeat the word, to provide the part of speech or to provide the definition or use it in a sentence.
- When the Speller is sure of the word, he/she SAYS ALOUD the word, spells it, and SAYS it again. The Speller must begin spelling within 30 seconds. After starting to spell a word, a speller may stop and start over. The speller must tell the judges that he or she is starting over, and he/she may start over only once. The Speller must speak loudly enough to be heard by the judges. If the Speller is correct, he/she continues to the next round. If the Speller is incorrect, he/she is eliminated and the Spelling Master gives the correct spelling.
- Round 2: Team Bee (Teams of 3 spellers) (7:45- 9)
- Sponsored Word Written Spelling Round.
- We will offer the community and to local businesses the chance to sponsor a word for $20. For example, a doctor’s office might sponsor a word like “pneumonia” or a music store could sponsor a word like “ukulele.” All teams will spell the sponsored words at the same time by writing them legibly on their whiteboards/blackboards. The teams with the best results in this round will move to the final round.
- In the written round, if a team wants help, they can pay $20 to ask a person in the audience how to spell a word. Alternatively, if someone in the audience really wants to help a team, they can pay $20 to help.
- A written round winner will be announced. Teams that want to exit before the oral round may do so, but they will not be eligible for the grand fuzzy bee trophy.
- Themed Word Oral Round:
- The oral round is much more standard, but assistance can still be purchased. The spelling will proceed in rounds, with each team getting their own word to spell. If a team misspells their word, they are out. If all teams get their word wrong in a round, everyone starts again in a new round. The appointed speller from each team will say the word, spell it, and say it again. Upon request, the spelling master will provide definitions, word origins, and a sentence using the word. After hearing their word, teams can pay $20 to buy a new word. If they don’t get the new word right, they are out.
- The oral rounds will feature words of similar difficulty drawn from areas of interest to Salem and the North Shore, such as sailing, history, chop suey sandwiches, cruise ships, and surviving Haunted Happenings.
* Disclaimer: This is our first time trying this so the rules and regulations may change depending on how many teams, individuals, sponsored words, etc. there are. Thank you for understanding and being patient.
