2. JOB TITLE:1-1 SEND Support worker

3. RESPONSIBLE TO:Teddy’s Preschool Management

4. JOB PURPOSE: To work as part of a close team supporting individual children with Special Educational Needs aged from 2 to 5 years; delivering the EYFS framework; facilitating developmental progress and school readiness;ensuring the safeguarding of children remains paramount. To work with the Special Educational Needs Development Co-ordinator(SENDCo) and Local Authority SEN Development Officers, by planning and leading activities alongside the child’s chosen activities to ensure inclusive practice can be delivered to meet the individual child’s needs.

The role has a statutory, occupational requirement to ensure the safety and welfare of all children using our services. The post holder will take responsibility for ensuring safeguarding children is a priority, and follow both YMCA safeguarding policy and Local authority statutory guidance as outlined in the LSCB Compact agreement.

5. MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

a)To work as a practitioner of the early years team, holistically promoting and supporting the foundation years of early childhood learning

b)To work alongside the settings SENDCo providing quality individually tailored care and learning opportunities for each child.

c)To work as a keyperson, nurturing and meeting the individual developmental needs and learning of the child, building supportive relationships with the child and their parents ensuring clear and quality levels of frequent communication.

d)To work with the Local Authority Special Educational Needs Development Officer (SENDO), and other professionals within the Team around the family (TAF) to ensure multi agency working is effective.

e)To holistically provide children, parents and families with identified additional needs with advice, guidance and support.

f)To act with sensitivity, compassion and knowledge towards the children, parents and families at all times.

g)To respect the wishes of the parents and families; respecting confidentiality and remaining non-judgemental throughout.

h)To work with the setting Management team ensuring the provision has all necessary measures in place to be able to support children, parents and families with additional needs.

i)To work with and alongside the settings staff team to ensure integration is evident throughout the setting.

j)To advise parents and families on what additional support is available in the local area outside of the setting such as groups and drop-ins.

k)To be active in identifying children who may have specific additional needs following the settings policy and procedure’s in which necessary steps to take.

l)To ensure that where appropriate and with parental permission ‘Individual Learning Plans’ are put into place, working alongside parents and outside agencies such as portage and the local SEND team for additional advice and guidance.

m)To ensure that all practitioners involved in the child’s care, learning and development are made aware of ILP’s and their role within the child’s care, learning and development.

n)To work with the SEND Co-ordinator ensuring measures are in place to review and evaluate ILP’s with the settings manager, child’s key person, any outside agencies involved and parents.

o)To work with the SEND Co-ordinator following the settings policies and procedures ensuring that information sharing and where applicable EHA is followed correctly and with confidentiality at all times.

p)To ensure that any relevant background information about individual children with additional needs is collected, recorded, shared, updated and stored securely.

q)To search out resources, equipment and activities that will help to support individual children’s additional needs.

r)To ensure the setting remains inclusive for all children, parents and families to use.

s)To search out and access with enthusiasm training opportunities within the local Borough and immediate Boroughs, to share knowledge with the team and ensure positive changes are made where applicable.

In addition to the job set out in this job description the worker may, from time to time, be required to undertake additional or other duties as necessary within his or her capabilities and status to meet the needs of YMCA Bournemouth.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The work is of a varied nature, in that there are significant periods of standing, walking and some manual handling of persons and equipment. Some outdoor work and client personal hygiene requirements impact on the normal working environment.
The nature of the work requires sensitivity, tact and calmness and the ability to deal with an unpredictable range of enquiries and help for a wide range of children. There is a potential of exposure to acquired infection, verbal or physical abuse affecting personal safety relating to the provision of care.
Manual handling of play equipment involved in outdoor and indoor play with children. Additional lifting and transport of equipment in relation to setting up provision and outreach work.
NB: The aim of the job description is to indicate the general purpose and level of responsibility of the post. Duties may be subject to periodic review by Management or a nominated representative (in consultation with the post holder) to reflect the changing work composition of the business.

6. SCALE AND IMPACT

The 1-1 Support Worker will act as a member of Teddy’s Preschool, working within the YMCA Family and Relationships Services. This positon is funded by the Local Authority and is paid by the YMCA Bournemouth.

7. DISCRETION TO ACT

Authority to act is outlined in the job responsibilities and in line with the organisation programme policy documents.

8. ENVIRONMENT

The Preschool is based on the site of Pokesdown Children’s Centre, Freemantle Hall, 34 Somerset Road, Pokesdown BH7 6JJ, and will operate as an integral part of YMCA Bournemouth.

9. RELATIONSHIPS

Internal – The worker will relate to other staff members through regular staff meetings and report to the Preschool Deputy Manager/Manager on a regular basis.

External – The worker will develop and maintain effective communication and working relationships with all multi-agency representatives. He/she will also relate to parents and carers who may potentially use the Pre-school.

SECTION C: TERMS AND CONDITIONS

1. SALARY

YMCA Bournemouth Grade 4: £15,600 - £18,928 per annum, pro rata - level on scale according to

experience and qualifications.

2. HOURS OF WORK

15 hours per week, term time only.

3. TERM OF CONTRACT

Permanent subject to successful completion of a three month probationary period.

4. PAID LEAVE ENTITLEMENT

This is a term time only position. Allocated Leave will be worked out and paid pro rata to be

discussed upon employment.

5. SICK PAY PROVISION

Two weeks per annum pro rata.

6. PENSION ENTITLEMENT

After three months of employment the worker will be eligible to join YMCA Bournemouth’s stakeholder pension scheme. His/hers line manager should be asked to provide details.

7. PERIOD OF NOTICE OFFERED AND REQUIRED

One month’s notice is required from the worker and one month’s notice will be given by the

YMCA or the statutory minimum if greater.

8. CONDITIONS OF APPOINTMENT

The employment will be subject to satisfactory references and a Disclosure and Barring Service Enhanced Disclosure. This post is subject to the rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) order 1975 and (Exceptions) (Amendment) order 1986.

9. IN-SERVICE TRAINING

The person appointed will be expected to participate in In-service training as deemed appropriate by the Preschool management for which budgetary provision will be made.

10. MISCELLANEOUS

The management will be responsible for carrying out regular work reviews with the post holder.
