PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS

A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division 1 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.

B. Refer to Drawings for sign types, sign copy listing, and sign locations.

1.2 SUMMARY

A. This Section includes the following:

1. Interior plastic photopolymer signage.

1.3 SUBMITTALS

A. Product Data: Include construction details, material descriptions, dimensions of individual components and profiles, and finishes for each type of sign.

B. Shop Drawings: Include plans, elevations, and large-scale sections of typical members and other components. Show mounting methods, grounds, mounting heights, layout, spacing, reinforcement, accessories, and installation details.

  1. Provide message list for each sign, including large-scale details of wording, lettering, art work, and braille layout.

C. Samples for Initial Selection: For each type of sign material indicated that involves color selection.

D. Samples for Verification: For each type of sign, include the following Samples to verify color selected.

E. Qualification Data: For Installer.

F. Maintenance Data: For signage cleaning and maintenance requirements to include in maintenance manuals.

G. Replacement Instructions: Provide in writing, instructions to Owner on how to replace name inserts, turn around time required, etc.

1.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Source Limitations: Obtain each sign type through one source from a single manufacturer.

B. Regulatory Requirements: Comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and with code provisions as adopted by authorities having jurisdiction.

C. Product Options: Drawings indicate size, profiles, and dimensional requirements of signage and are based on the specific system indicated. Refer to Division 1 Section "Product Requirements."

1. Do not modify intended aesthetic effects, as judged solely by Architect, except with A/E or Designer’s approval. If modifications are proposed, submit comprehensive explanatory data to Architect for review.

1.5 PROJECT CONDITIONS

A. Field Measurements: Where sizes of signs are determined by dimensions of surfaces on which they are installed, verify dimensions by field measurement before fabrication and indicate measurements on Shop Drawings.

1.6 COORDINATION

A. For signs supported by or anchored to permanent construction, advise installers of anchorage devices about specific requirements for placement of anchorage devices and similar items to be used for attaching signs.

installation of anchorage devices.

Part 2 – Products

1 Manufacturers
2.2 Interior Panel signs

A. General: Provide panel signs that comply with requirements indicated for materials, thickness, finishes, colors, designs, shapes, sizes and details of construction.

1. Produce smooth, flat panel sign surfaces constructed to remain flat under installed conditions within tolerance of plus or minus 1/16 inch measured diagonally.

B. Available Manufacturers:

1. Stamprite Supersine, Lansing, MI (800-328-1988)

2. Architect pre-approved manufacturer of product meeting or exceeding specifications.

C. Cast-acrylic sheet: Manufacturer’s standard 1/8 inch thickness and as follows:

1. Color as selected by Architect from manufacturer’s full range.

2. Modified Acrylic (P.E.T.G.), matte clear with photopolymer laminate sheets: Provide light-sensitive, water-wash photopolymer face layer bonded to P.E.T.G. base layer to produce a composite sheet with overall thickness of (1/8 inch, 1/16 or ¼ inch).

3. Raised copy, graphic symbols and braille to be integral with sign background. Glued-on or milled braille is unacceptable.

D. Unframed Panel Signs: Fabricate signs with edges mechanically and smoothly finished to comply with the following requirements:

1. Edge condition: Square cut (or eased)

2. Corner condition: Radius to 1/2”

3. Border: Raised, sub-surface vinyl applied, or none

E. Graphic content and style: Provide sign copy that complies with requirements indicated below and in the sign schedule and drawings for size, style, spacing, content, mounting height and location, material, finishes and colors of signage,

1. ADA-compliant raised copy not less than 1/32 inch, 5/8” minimum text height, with accompanying grade 2 braille message.

2. Acrylic-modified P.E.T.G. with photopolymer laminate, computer-generated copy and graphics are photo-exposed to photopolymer and factory processed to create raised copy and grade 2 braille message, integral with sign background.

3. Pictograms and other artwork to be reverse-applied vinyl or silk-screened process in colors as indicated. (or processed photopolymer raised image.)

F. Colored Coatings for Acrylic and Acrylic P.E.T.G. Sheet:

1. For background colors, select from manufacturer’s standard color range, or provide Pantone Matching System (PMS) colored coatings, including inks and paints, that are recommended by acrylic manufacturer for optimum adherence to surface, and that are non-fading for application intended.

2. For raised copy colors, provide one of the following:

For photopolymer raised-copy, provide manufacturer’s standard hot-stamp foil colors in full range available.

Part 3 – EXECUTION

3.1 Examination

A. Examine all surfaces, areas and conditions with installer present, for compliance with requirements for installation tolerances and other conditions affecting performance of work.

3.2 Installation

A. General: Locate signs and accessories where indicated, using mounting methods of types described and in compliance with manufacturer’s written instructions.

1. Install signs level, plumb, and at heights indicated as per Barrier-Free Design and ADA-compliant, 60” a.f.f. to center of sign and 3” from jamb adjacent to latch-side of doors where applicable, and allowing approach to sign without encountering protruding objects or standing within swing of door.

B. Wall-mounted Panel Signs: Attach panel signs to wall surfaces using methods indicated below.

1. Vinyl-tape mounting: use double-sided very high bond (VHB) tape to adhere signs to smooth, non-porous surfaces. Do not use for vinyl-coated or rough surfaces.

2. Silicone-adhesive mounting: Use liquid-silicone adhesive recommended by manufacturer to attach signs to porous, irregular, or vinyl-coated surfaces. Use double-sided foam tape to hold sign in place until silicone adhesive has fully cured.

3. Mechanical fasteners: use non-removable mechanical fasteners placed though pre-drilled holes in sign face, or through shim plate. Use proper anchors at masonry walls as recommended by manufacturer. Attach sign panel to shim plate using Vinyl-tape method described above.

4. Where signs are scheduled or indicated to be mounted on glass, provide matching acrylic back plate at reverse-side of glass to conceal mounting materials.

3 Cleaning and Protection
3.3 After installation, clean soiled sign surface and protect from damage until acceptance by Owner.
3.4 Schedule: As indicated in drawings or on attached sign schedule.

A. In general: all rooms leading off from a corridor are to receive a tactile sign with braille message. This includes all Storage, Mechanical, or Electrical rooms which would normally remain locked. Rooms within rooms do not require a sign unless otherwise indicated on sign schedule and / or sign drawings.
