CITI Training Information

Section 1: Creating an Account

To create a CITI Program account, please go to and click the “Register” button found in the “Create an account” box on the right side of the screen.

Next, enter ‘Savannah State University’ in the “Select Your Organization Affiliation” search box, and then click “Continue to Step 2”.

Then enter your first name, last name, and email address in the appropriate fields, clicking “Continue to Step 3” when completed.

Create your username and password following the directions given and click “Continue to Step 4” when completed with all fields.

Next, enter your country of residence and click “Continue to Step 5”.

Answer the questions of step 5 as you feel necessary and click “Continue to Step 6”.

Complete the contact information in step 6 and click “Continue to Step 7”.

Finally, answer questions 1 through 5 to select your curriculum. For assistance on selected your curriculum, please see the next section. Click “Complete Registration” when completed.

Section 2: Selecting Your Curriculum

Once you are in “Step 7” of the registration process, you are ready to select your curriculum.

Question 1 – Human Subjects Research

Read each selection carefully and choose all designations that apply. Please note that different circumstances require different trainings, i.e. a project that is submitted to the IRB for review will require different training than in class research. Please use the table below to assist you in your decision.

Question 2 – Good Clinical Practice

Unless otherwise instructed by your supervisor, instructor, or mandated by federal regulation, please select “Not at this time”.

Question 3 – Health Information Privacy and Security

Unless otherwise instructed by your supervisor, instructor, or mandated by federal regulation, please select “Not at this time”.

Question 4 – Responsible Conduct of Research

Please select ONE of the following based on your course, major, or research project. You can add another later if necessary. YOU MUST SELECT ONE. DO NOT SELECT “Not at this time”. Please note: RCR is required for faculty and staff participating in sponsored projects & faculty and students applying to the IRB.

Question 5 – Laboratory Animal Welfare

Please follow the instructions under question 5 if you plan to use laboratory animals. If not, you may leave this section blank.

Section 3: Requirements

Institutional Review Board (IRB):

For ANY research project submitted to the Institutional Review Board (IRB) for review MUST have the following modules completed:

  1. Social & Behavioral Research – Basic/Refresher
  2. Responsible Conduct of Research (which ever module pertains to research being completed)

If you need to add a module, please click “Add a Course or Update Learner Groups” and repeat Section 2.

Institutional Animal Care & Uses Committee (IACUC):

For any research project submitted to the IACUC for review, please contact Dr. Elissa Purnell at extension 4447.

Responsible Conduct in Research (RCR):

For all mentors, students & PIs conducting any type of research, involving human subjects or not, RCR training MUST be completed. You ONLY need to complete the Responsible Conduct of Research module that is related to the research being conducted.
