SECTION 04 05 15 – COLORED MASONRY MORTAR AND GROUT

This master section specifies masonry mortar and grout where mortar color other than standard gray is required. If standard gray is the only color required, use 04060m gray. CROSS OUT material not applicable. ADD TEXT where required.

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1SUMMARY

  1. This Section includes:
  2. Premixed masonry cement.
  3. Mortar pigments.
  4. Cement grout for concrete masonry assemblies.
  5. Related Sections include the following:
  6. Division 04, Section “Unit Masonry” for cavity and composite wall construction.

1.2SUBMITTALS

  1. Product Data: For each different mortar and grout type.
  2. Samples for Initial Selection: For the following:
  3. Colored mortar Samples showing the full range of colors available.
  4. Material Test Reports: From a qualified testing agency indicating and interpreting test results of the following for compliance with requirements indicated:
  5. Mortar complying with property requirements of ASTMC270.
  6. Grout mixes complying with compressive strength requirements of ASTMC476. Include description of type and proportions of grout ingredients.
  7. Each cement product required for mortar and grout, including name of manufacturer, brand, type, and weight slips at time of delivery.
  8. Cold-Weather Procedures: Detailed description of methods, materials, and equipment to be used to comply with cold-weather requirements.

1.3QUALITY ASSURANCE

  1. Testing Agency Qualifications: An independent testing agency, acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction, qualified according to ASTMC1093 to conduct the testing indicated, as documented according to ASTME548.
  2. Source Limitations for Mortar Materials: Obtain mortar ingredients of a uniform quality, including color for exposed masonry, from one manufacturer for each cementitious component and from one source or producer for each aggregate.
  3. Mockups: Before installing unit masonry, build mockups to verify selections made under sample Submittals and to demonstrate aesthetic effects and qualities of materials and execution. Build mockups to comply with the following requirements, using materials indicated for the completed Work:
  4. Comply with requirements of related masonry assembly section(s).

1.4DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

  1. Store cementitious materials on elevated platforms, under cover, and in a dry location. Do not use cementitious materials that have become damp.
  2. Store aggregates where grading and other required characteristics can be maintained and contamination avoided.
  3. Store masonry accessories, including metal items, to prevent corrosion and accumulation of dirt and oil.

1.5PROJECT CONDITIONS

  1. Cold-Weather Requirements: Do not use frozen materials or materials mixed or coated with ice or frost. Do not build on frozen substrates. Remove and replace unit masonry damaged by frost or by freezing conditions. Comply with cold-weather construction requirements contained in ACI530.1/ASCE6/TMS602.
  2. Cold-Weather Cleaning: Use liquid cleaning methods only when air temperature is 40 degFand above and will remain so until masonry has dried, but not less than 7 days after completing cleaning.
  3. Hot-Weather Requirements: Protect unit masonry work when temperature and humidity conditions produce excessive evaporation of water from mortar and grout. Provide artificial shade and wind breaks and use cooled materials as required. Comply with hot-weather construction requirements contained in ACI 530.1/ASCE 6/TMS602.
  4. When ambient temperature exceeds 100 degF, or 90 degF with a wind velocity greater than 8mph, do not spread mortar beds more than 48inches ahead of masonry. Set masonry units within one minute of spreading mortar.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1MORTAR AND GROUT MATERIALS

  1. Masonry Cement: ASTMC91.
  2. For pigmented mortar, use a colored cement formulation as required to produce the color indicated or, if not indicated, as selected from manufacturer's standard formulations.
  3. Pigments shall not exceed 5 percent of masonry cement by weight for mineral oxides nor 1 percent for carbon black.
  4. For colored-aggregate mortar, use natural color cement as necessary to produce required mortar color.
  5. Aggregate for Mortar: ASTMC144; except for joints less than 1/4 inch thick, use aggregate graded with 100 percent passing the No.16 sieve.
  6. Colored-Mortar Aggregates: Natural-colored sand or ground marble, granite, or other sound stone; of color necessary to produce required mortar color.
  7. Portland Cement for grout: ASTMC150, TypeI or II, except TypeIII may be used for cold-weather construction.
  8. Aggregate for Grout: ASTMC404.
  9. Mortar Pigments: Natural and synthetic iron oxides and chromium oxides, compounded for use in mortar mixes. Use only pigments with a record of satisfactory performance in masonry mortar.
  10. Cold-Weather Admixture: Nonchloride, noncorrosive, accelerating admixture complying with ASTMC494, TypeC, and recommended by the manufacturer for use in masonry mortar of composition indicated.

Include below when using decorative concrete masonry units in exterior work.

2.2MORTAR AND GROUT MIXES

  1. General: Do not use admixtures, including pigments, air-entraining agents, accelerators, retarders, water-repellent agents, antifreeze compounds, or other admixtures, unless otherwise indicated.
  2. Do not use calcium chloride in mortar or grout.
  3. Add cold-weather admixture (if used) at the same rate for all mortar, regardless of weather conditions, to ensure that mortar color is consistent.
  4. Preblended, Dry Mortar Mix: Furnish dry mortar ingredients in the form of a preblended mix. Measure quantities by weight to ensure accurate proportions, and thoroughly blend ingredients before delivering to Project site.

We typically specify Type S for all applications due to the labor experience and language issues on site.

  1. Mortar for Unit Masonry: Comply with ASTM C270, Proportion Specification.
  2. Limit cementitious materials in mortar to portland cement, mortar cement, and lime.
  3. For masonry below grade, in contact with earth, and where indicated, use Type S.
  4. For reinforced masonry and where indicated, use Type S.
  5. For exterior, above-grade, load-bearing and non-load-bearing walls and parapet walls; for interior load-bearing walls; for interior non-load-bearing partitions; and for other applications where another type is not indicated, use Type S.
  6. Grout for Unit Masonry: Comply with ASTMC476.
  7. Use grout of type indicated or, if not otherwise indicated, of type (fine or coarse) that will comply with Table1.15.1 of ACI530.1/ASCE6/TMS602 for dimensions of grout spaces and pour height.
  8. Provide grout with a slump of 8 to 11 inches as measured according to ASTMC143.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1EXAMINATION

  1. Examine conditions, with Installer present, for compliance with requirements for installation and other conditions affecting performance.

3.2MIXING

  1. Mix mortar and grout using gas powered equipment of adequate size, in good working order.

3.3INSTALLATION, GENERAL

  1. Refer to installation requirements of corresponding Division 04 masonry assembly section(s).

3.4MORTAR BEDDING AND JOINTING

  1. Maintain uniform mortar color and texture by consistent timing and method of joint tooling.

3.5MASONRY MORTAR COLOR SCHEDULE

Insert mortar manufacturer name and number if selected. Retain “match existing mortar statement” or “match mortar to masonry unit color” if that is design intent.

  1. Mortar for FB1: As selected by Architect.
  2. Mortar for FB2: As selected by Architect.
  3. Mortar for Stone: As selected by Architect.
