PROJECT ARCHITECT RESPONSIBILITY: This is a general specification guide, intended to be used by experienced construction professionals, in conjunction with good construction practice and professional judgment. This guide is intended to assist in the creation of a building specification that is to be fully reviewed and edited by the architect or engineer. Sections of this guide should be included, edited, or omitted based on the requirements of a specific project. It is the responsibility of both the specifier and the purchaser to determine if a product or system is suitable for its use on a specific project. The CavityComplete™ Wall System manufacturers assume no responsibility for the content of this specification relative to actual projects and specifically disclaim any and all liability for any errors or omissions in design, detail, structural capability, attachment details, shop drawings or other construction related details, whether based upon the information provided by the CavityComplete™Wall System manufacturers or otherwise.

EXTERIOR ENCLOSURE PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
Note to Specifier: Include this specification section in your Project Manual to specify the CavityComplete™ Wall System, a high-performing wall system with components that have been fully tested together as an exterior wall, and that are jointly marketed and warranted by the product manufacturers as a complete exterior wall system.
If you prefer to use your own office master specifications, copy the materials in Part 2 into your specifications along with Paragraphs 1.1A, 1.3A through F, 1.4A and 1.7A.
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1SUMMARY
- Wall System Description: Furnish and install specified products that have been tested as the CavityComplete™Wall Systemmeeting specified performance requirements for thermal, air, water, and fire resistance. The system assembly shall include the following products:
- Masonry veneer cladding.
- Masonry accessories including prefabricated through wall flashing, masonry veneer anchors, and mortar droppings protection.
- Rigid continuous insulation installed with air/water sealing washers outboard of gypsum sheathing.
- Fluid-applied vapor-permeable air barrier applied to gypsum sheathing.
- Gypsum sheathing with sealed joints.
- Cold-formed metal framing.
- Insulation batts in the framing cavity, fiber glass or mineral wool, faced or unfaced as required.
- Firesafing at jamb and sill openings, and floor lines as required.
- Interior gypsum wallboard.

1.2Submittals
- Product Data: Submit manufacturer’s product data sheets, system compatibility statements, LEED® data statements for products which may contribute to Credits, and manufacturer's installation instructions.
- Test Reports: Submit test reports or engineering judgments/analysis or both, or other approved documentation of the performance requirements listed in Paragraph 1.3.
- Limited Warranty: Submit manufacturer’s “Project Profile” verification establishing project eligibility for a CavityComplete™ full Wall System materials defect warrantyas described in Paragraph 1.7. No substitutions will be accepted except as described in paragraph1.4 D.
1.3PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
- Fire Containment and Resistance:
- NFPA 285 Limited Fire Propagation:
Provide products per Paragraph 2.1 that as a complete wall system pass NFPA 285, Standard Fire Test Method for Evaluation of Fire Propagation Characteristics of Exterior Non-Load-Bearing Wall Assemblies Containing Combustible Components. - ASTM E119 Fire Resistance:
Provide products per Paragraph 2.1 that as a system passes ASTM E119, Test Methods for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials. - ASTM E2307 Perimeter Fire Containment:
Provide products per Paragraph 2.1 that as a system passes ASTM E2307, Standard Test Method for Determining Fire Resistance of Perimeter Fire Barrier Systems Using Intermediate-Scale, Multistory Test Apparatus. - ASTM E2357 Air Leakage:
Provide a continuous air barrier wall system that has an air leakage not exceeding 0.04 cubic feet per square foot per minute under a pressure differential of 0.3 in. water (1.57 pounds per square foot) [0.20 liters per second per square meter at a pressure difference of 75 Pascals (0.20 L/(s·m²) @ 75 Pa)] when tested in accordance with ASTM E 2357. Assembly shall accommodate movements of building materials by providing expansion and control joints as required. - ASTM E331 Water Penetration:
Provide a wall system tested in accordance with ICC-ES AC 212, Section 4.5, Acceptance Criteria for Water Resistive Coatings Used as Water Resistive Barriers over Exterior Sheathing, demonstrating that the system, tested in accordance with ASTM E331, shows no visible water penetration for 15 minutes at an air-pressure differential across the wall assembly of 2.86 psf (137 Pa), and 45 minutes at 6.27 psf (300 Pa). - Adhesion and Compatibility
Provide a wall system that has all components that will have intimate contact tested according to ASTM C794, for adhesion and AAMA 713 for compatibility. Adhesion of the components that will be in contact should be greater than 5 pli, with a failure mode that is a minimum 80% Cohesive Failure. All components having contact should also pass AAMA 713 at both Level 1 and Level 2.
- Thermal Resistance:
Provide a wall system that meets or exceeds code required R-value for exterior wall assemblies in the jurisdiction of the project. Submit manufacturer product data sheets and/or test reports for insulation performed by a qualified testing agency documenting R-value and other physical properties. - Sound Transmission: (include if STC and OITC are important to project performance)
Provide a wall system that meets or exceeds a Sound Transmission Class (STC) >55, and Outdoor-Indoor Transmission Class (OITC) of >45 to >50 depending on wall design. Submit wall system engineering analysis or test reports for the wall assembly performed by a qualified acoustical engineer or testing agency documenting STC and OITC classifications. - Indoor Air Quality:
Provide insulation products (fiberglass batt and continuous rigid insulation) and vapor permeable air/water barrier that carry GREENGUARD Gold Certification for low-emitting materials. - Recycle Content:
Provide insulation products (fiberglass batt, mineral wool batt and safing, and continuous rigid insulation) whose recycled content is verified via third party certification. - Third Party Listing/Certification/Engineering Judgments:
Provide independent third party verification listings or engineering judgments for the primary code requirements of fire spread and resistance (Par. 1.3 A), air leakage (Par. 1.3 B) and water penetration (Par. 1.3 C).
1.4Quality Assurance
- Exterior Enclosure Assembly: Materials included in this section are part of CavityComplete™Wall System, a tested and warrantied wall system, composed of products from multiple manufacturers. Do not substitute products without prior documentation of the complete assembly performance requirements specified.
- Installer Qualifications: The installation work of this section shall be performed by an experienced contractor with a minimum of two years experience installing similar assemblies.
- Preconstruction Meeting: Convene a meeting of involved sub-contractors a minimum of two weeks prior to commencing work described in this section. The agenda shall include at a minimum, materials proposed for use, verification of eligibility for the CavityComplete™Wall System limited warranty, sequence of construction, coordination with substrate preparation, compatibility of materials, coordination with installation of adjacent and covering materials. Attendance is required by representatives of related trades including covering materials, substrate materials and adjacent materials.
- System Substitution: The products listed in this section are tested and warranted as a system. The Contractor shall provide the products of the named manufacturers without substitution, unless a written request for an ‘or equal’ complete system substitution has been approved in writing by the Architect. Substitution requests must be accompanied by the following in order for the Architect to consider a substitution:
- Verification that proposed products meet published performance criteria of the specified products.
- Verification from the proposed manufacturers of independent third party listings or engineering judgments that the proposed system substitution meets the fire propagation, fire resistance, air leakage and water penetration requirements of this section.
- Verification that the proposed manufacturers offer a complete system warranty including all products proposed for use.
1.5Delivery, Storage, and Handling
- Store and protect products in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions. Store materials elevated off grade in a dry area and protect from water, direct sunlight, flame, and ignition sources. Do not install insulation that has been damaged or wetted.
1.6PROJECT Conditions
- Comply with manufacturer's recommendations regarding weather conditions before and during installation and protection of the installed system.
1.7Warranty
- CavityComplete™Wall System Limited Warranty: Submit the CavityComplete™Wall System actual, limited warranty,or a substitute in accordance with paragraph 1.4 D, that jointly covers the products including cavity batt and rigid continuous insulation, air/water resistive barrier, masonry veneer anchors/low conductivity head clip/pintle wire ties, prefabricated through wall flashing and premolded end dams/corners, mortar droppings protection, masonry head joint vents, and air/water sealing washers and fasteners.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1Materials
- General: Provide the materials specified as listed. Materials are part of the tested/warranted CavityComplete™ Wall System. No substitutions will be accepted except as described in paragraph 1.4 D.
- Masonry Veneer Cladding:
Brick, stone or CMU veneer as selected by Architect. - Masonry Veneer Anchors:
Heckmann Building Products Pos-I-Tie® Brick Veneer Anchoring System consisting of a barrel screw with 1 inch long self drilling tip, and low conductivity composite ThermalClip® attached to flanged head to receive a pintle wire tie 3/16” diameter, hot dip galvanized after fabrication or Type 304 Stainless Steel. Wire tie to extend a minimum of 1 1/2” into veneer but no closer than 5/8” from the exterior. Barrel screw includes flanged head with integral zinc/EPDM washer, with length to match combined thickness of gypsum sheathing and foam plastic continuous insulation. Also include Rodenhouse, Inc., 2 inch diameter low thermal conductivity Thermal-Grip®brick-tieWashers. Anchor system installed 16 inches vertically attached into steel studs, or, spaced as required for masonry veneer other than brick. - Mortar Droppings Protection:
Mortar Net Solutions™ MortarNet®, 90% open weave mesh drainage mesh. (1 or 2 inch thickness to fill cavity width.) - Masonry Weep Opening:
Mortar Net Solutions™ WeepVent, 90% open weave mesh drainage for use in masonry veneer head joints. - Through-Wall Flashing:
Mortar Net Solutions™ TotalFlash® rubberized asphalt flashing membrane assembly fabricated with Tremco®ExoAir®TWF through wall flashing, including termination bar, laminated drainage mesh and drip edge, at the base of the wall, and on all shelf angles and full cavity depth lintels over openings. TotalFlash® is set in, and edges sealed, with Mortar Net Solutions™ MPE-1 sealant. Corners and end dams for through wall flashing shall be Mortar Net Solutions™ preformed CompleteFlash. - Air Space:
Minimum 1 inch, maximum 2 inches wide. - Rigid Continuous Insulation Outboard of Sheathing:
Owens Corning™ FOAMULAR® 250 Extruded Polystyrene (XPS) Rigid Foam Insulation, ASTM C578 Type IV, maximum 4 inches thick, temporarily secured with Rodenhouse, Inc., Thermal-Grip® ci Prong Washers and Grip-Deck™ screws. - Fluid-Applied Vapor-Permeable Air/Water Barrier Applied to Sheathing:
Tremco® ExoAir® 230 air and water resistive barrier, UV resistant; applied minimum 70 mils wet to achieve 35 mils dry thickness, roller or spray applied. - Gypsum Sheathing with Sealed Joints:
ASTM C1177, Type X, 5/8 inch thick; with Tremco® Dymonic® 100 polyurethane sealant at horizontal and vertical sheathing joints, all perimeter edges, corners, and over all screw/fastener heads. - Cold-Formed Metal Framing:
ASTM A653, G90 zinc coated, gauge as required for L/600 deflection criteria, minimum base-metal thickness 18 gauge, minimum 3 5/8” depth. - Insulation in Framing Cavity:
Owens Corning™ EcoTouch® PINK® FIBERGLAS™ Batt Insulation, R-13 minimum, (Flame Spread 25 faced, or Thermal Batt unfaced as required) (or Owens Corning™ Thermafiber® FireSpan 90® as required), or empty cavity design as detailed. - Firesafing at Jamb and Sill Openings:
Owens Corning™ Thermafiber® Safing, 4 pcf minimum (as needed if that detail is used for NFPA 285 compliance). - Interior Gypsum Wallboard:
ASTM C1396, Type X, 5/8 inch thick, with tapered long edges.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1EXAMINATION
- Examine the areas and conditions under which work of this section will be installed. Provide written report listing conditions detrimental to performance of work in this section. Do not proceed with installation until unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.
3.2INSTALLATION
- Comply with the CavityComplete™Wall System manufacturer's written instructions for each product and applications. Install products in proper relationship with each other and adjacent construction. Restore or replace damaged components.
3.3PROTECTION
- Protect stored and installed products from damage due to harmful weather, water, heat and UV exposures, physical abuse, and other causes. Provide temporary coverings or enclosures where insulation is subject to abuse and cannot be concealed and protected by permanent construction immediately after installation.
The CavityComplete™ Wall System excludes the masonry veneer, steel studs and interior and exterior gypsum board.
